A tactical sling for an AR 15 works as a system, not as a single piece of webbing. Four decisions do most of the work: which front and rear attachment points you use, what hardware connects the sling to them, where the adjuster sits when the rifle is on your body, and how the webbing routes around the gear you wear. Get those right and an ordinary two point sling carries well. Get them wrong and an expensive sling still hangs badly.

Before you fit anything, clear the rifle

Everything below involves handling the rifle, pulling hard on it, letting it hang unsupported and moving it across your body. That is not work you do with a loaded gun. Clear it the same way every time, and clear it again any time you set it down and pick it back up during the build.

Clear the rifle first, every time

Point the muzzle in a safe direction. Remove the magazine. Lock the bolt to the rear, then look into the chamber and put a finger in it. Eyes and touch, not one or the other. Keep your finger off the trigger and keep the muzzle in a safe direction for the entire fitting session, including while you are tugging on webbing and testing how the rifle hangs. No ammunition in the room you are working in.

The sling as a system

Most sling frustration is blamed on the sling itself when it is really a configuration problem. A carbine sling has four parts that interact, and changing one changes the others.

  • Anchor points. Where the webbing meets the rifle, front and rear. These set the hang angle before anything else gets a vote.
  • Hardware. The swivels, loops or hooks that make the connection, plus the mounts they attach to.
  • The webbing path. Which way the strap wraps around your torso and which shoulder carries it.
  • The adjuster. The mechanism that shortens and lengthens the loop, and critically, where that mechanism physically sits when the rifle is slung.

Style sits above all of this. This article assumes you have picked a style and now need it dialed in. Most tactical builds land on a two point, so that is the default assumed below, with notes where a convertible sling changes the answer.

Choosing the front and rear attachment points

The front point is the one you have the most freedom with, because handguards give you a lot of real estate. The rear point is usually more constrained, because the stock and receiver extension only offer so many places to put webbing. Front point

Forward on the handguard hangs the muzzle lower and gives you a longer, gentler webbing angle across the chest. Closer to the receiver keeps the rifle more compact against your body and keeps webbing away from a light or laser mounted near the muzzle end. If your handguard has M-LOK or KeyMod slots, you have a range of positions and it costs you nothing to test two or three of them before committing. If it has a Picatinny rail, an adapter gives you the same freedom.

Rear point

The rear point decides where the buttstock sits when the rifle hangs. Many stocks provide a loop, a slot or a socket, and many receiver end plates are available with a sling provision, but do not assume yours has one. Look at the rifle in front of you rather than at a spec sheet. If nothing usable exists, a mount solves it, and our sling mounts cover the common conversions.

Side matters

Whichever points you use, decide early which side of the rifle they live on. A sling that attaches on the same side as your support hand tends to route more cleanly across the body for a right handed shooter, and mirrored for a left handed one. Mixing sides front and rear puts a twist in the webbing that you will feel every time the rifle rotates.

Why point spacing changes how the rifle hangs

The distance between the front and rear points is the most under-appreciated variable in a sling build. Two rifles wearing identical slings hang differently if one has its front point further forward.

Think of it as a triangle. The rifle is one side, the webbing is the other two, and the point where the sling crosses your shoulder is the apex. Move the front point forward and you lengthen the front leg of that triangle, which drops the muzzle and rotates the rifle nose down when you let go. Move it rearward and the rifle sits flatter and higher, closer to a horizontal carry across the chest.

Wide spacing also makes the sling more sensitive to length changes. When the two points are far apart, a small amount of slack lets the rifle swing a long way. There is no universally correct spacing. It depends on your torso, your armor and how you want the rifle to sit. Treat it as adjustable and actually adjust it: fit the sling, let go of the rifle entirely, look down, then move the front point and repeat.

Hardware choices and how each one fails

Sling hardware is not exciting, but it is the part that fails, and it fails in predictable ways. Knowing the failure mode tells you what to inspect.

Metal hardware matters more than most people assume. Polymer parts are lighter and quieter, but they fail suddenly rather than gradually, usually under exactly the load you cared about. All metal hardware is one reason the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling is built the way it is.

Adjuster placement you can actually reach

A quick adjust sling is only quick if the tab is under your hand when you need it. This is the step most people skip, and it is the difference between a sling you use dynamically and a sling you set once and never touch again.

Sling the rifle in your normal carry position, close your eyes and reach for the adjuster with your support hand. If you have to hunt for it, or let go of the rifle to find it, it is in the wrong place. Re-thread until the tab lands where your hand naturally passes.

The common mistakes are having the adjuster too far forward so it ends up near the handguard where your support hand is already busy, and having it so far back that it rides behind your shoulder. Routing around a plate carrier and your support arm

Armor changes sling geometry. It adds bulk to your torso, it puts hard edges where the webbing wants to lie flat, and it usually adds pouches on the front that the rifle now has to clear.

Route the sling over the carrier rather than under it. Running webbing beneath the cummerbund or under a shoulder pad feels tidy but traps the sling, so it cannot slide when you transition shoulders and it drags the carrier around when you push the rifle out. Over the top means the sling can move independently of the armor, which is what you want.

Watch for three specific snag points: the front plate bag corner, admin or magazine pouches on the chest, and any radio or antenna on the shoulder. Sling the rifle, then run through the movements you actually make. Shoulder it, drop it, transition to the other shoulder, kneel, and rotate to both sides. If the webbing catches, adjust the routing before you adjust the sling length.

Your support arm also has a say. When the rifle is shouldered, the sling should not be pinned across the inside of your support elbow, because that limits how far you can extend and it fights you on every transition. Feed the webbing outside the arm, not through the crook of it.

Building for the kit you actually wear

Set the sling up in the clothing and gear you will really be in. A sling tuned in a t-shirt will be too short over a plate carrier and a winter jacket. A sling tuned over full kit will hang loose and sloppy in a t-shirt. Pick the configuration you spend the most time in, tune to that, and confirm the adjuster has enough travel to cover the others.

Setup verification checklist

Run this once the sling is fitted, in the kit you plan to wear, with the rifle confirmed empty. If any step fails, fix that step before moving on.

  1. Confirm the rifle is clear

    Magazine out, bolt locked to the rear, chamber checked by eye and by finger. Do this again even if you cleared it ten minutes ago.

  2. Pull test both attachment points

    Grab the sling near each connection and pull hard, straight and at an angle. Nothing should shift, click open or rotate out. Check the mount screws while you are there.

  3. Hang test

    Sling the rifle and let go completely, hands at your sides. Look down. The muzzle should be pointed somewhere you accept, and the rifle should not be resting against a pouch or digging into your ribs.

  4. Shoulder test, both sides

    Bring the rifle up to your primary shoulder, then transition to the other side. The sling should let you get there without unthreading itself from your arm or pulling your carrier sideways.

  5. Adjuster reach test

    Without looking, reach for the adjuster with your support hand. Cinch it tight, then let it back out. If you cannot find it or cannot work it, move it.

  6. Movement test

    Kneel, stand, turn both ways, walk, and go through a doorway. Watch for the muzzle finding places it should not, and for webbing catching on gear.

  7. Glove and layer check

    Repeat the adjuster test in gloves, and confirm the sling still has enough length range for your heaviest layer and your lightest.

  8. Recheck after a week

    Webbing settles and hardware loosens. Redo the pull test and the screw check after your first few outings, then periodically.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the front sling point go on an AR 15?

There is no single correct spot. Further forward on the handguard drops the muzzle and gives a longer webbing angle, while closer to the receiver keeps the rifle tighter to the body. Test at least two positions with the rifle slung and your normal gear on, and pick the one where the rifle hangs somewhere you actually want it.

Should the sling attach on the same side front and rear?

Usually yes. Mixing sides puts a twist in the webbing that you feel every time the rifle rotates, and it makes shoulder transitions less predictable. Pick a side based on your handedness, keep both points on it, and only deviate if a specific piece of gear forces it.
