A 3 point sling for AR15 rifles was widely treated as the serious answer to retention for years. It loops around the body and runs a second length along the rifle, so the gun stays on you hands free and still comes to the shoulder.
It fell out of favor because the adjustable two-point caught up and did the same job with less webbing in the way. Here is what the three-point got right, and what finally sank it.
How a 3 point sling for AR15 rifles actually works
Two of the three points are ones you already know: a front mount near the handguard and a rear mount at the stock end. The third is the sling itself. A separate loop runs around the shooter’s body, and the rifle rides on a shorter length of webbing that slides along that loop.
That sliding connection is the whole idea. Because the rifle hangs from a traveler rather than a fixed length, it moves up to the shoulder and back down to a hands-free carry without you adjusting anything. Let go and it stays where the body loop holds it, across the chest, muzzle down and slightly to one side.
A fixed-length two-point of the same era hung either loose enough to shoot from or tight enough to carry, and switching meant fishing for a buckle. The three-point removed that decision entirely, which at the time was a real advance.
What the three-point got right
It is easy to dismiss the three-point now, and that is unfair. It solved a genuine problem that nothing else on the market solved as well.
First, retention without hands. Drop the rifle to go to a sidearm, open a door, or carry something, and it stays pinned to your torso instead of swinging on a loose loop. That is the exact capability that sells slings today, and the three-point had it first.
Second, no adjustment step. The traveler does the work. A shooter under stress with degraded fine motor control does not have to find a tab or work a slider. The rifle simply goes where you push it.
Third, it fit most body types and most kit without fussing. Set the body loop once and it was close enough, which mattered for issued gear that had to fit everybody.
The three-point was an honest attempt at retention plus freedom of movement, built before quick adjustable two-points matured. Every hands-free carry feature people ask for today traces back through it.
The webbing across the receiver
Here is the failing that ended it. The three-point routes webbing along the top or side of the rifle, over the receiver area. That is not a design accident. It is how the traveler reaches the rifle from the body loop.
The consequences pile up. Webbing near the ejection port can foul brass on the way out, and a stoppage caused by your own sling is a bad day. Webbing across the receiver sits on top of the charging handle and the safety, and on rifles running an optic it can cross the sight window or the mount. It also crosses exactly where your support hand goes when you reach up to work a malfunction.
Shooters worked around it: route the webbing to one side, tape it down, sweep it clear. But a sling that needs a workaround to stay out of the ejection port is asking to be replaced, and once a two-point did the retention job with no webbing on the rifle, it was.
Snags, complexity, and the learning curve
The second problem is bulk. A three-point puts more webbing in play than a two-point, and every extra loop is a place to catch: kit, door handles, a cummerbund, a seat belt. In a vehicle or a doorway that is a real hazard, not a nitpick.
The third problem is complexity. A three-point has more to set up and more to get wrong. Route it backwards and it works, badly, in a way you will not notice until you try to shoot from it. Setting up a two-point takes about a minute. A three-point takes a conversation.
Then there is the shoulder transition. The rifle rides on a body loop with a fixed orientation, so moving it to the support shoulder makes the sling twist across your neck. A two-point handles that by loosening. A three-point handles it by making you think.
What replaced it
The quick adjustable two-point is what killed the three-point, and it did it by taking the good part and dropping the rest. Pull the tab and the sling cinches down, locking the rifle against your body for hands-free retention. Push the slider and it runs slack, so the rifle comes to the shoulder freely.
You do have to make that input, which is the one thing a three-point did not require. In exchange: no webbing across the receiver, nothing near the ejection port, far less to snag, and a sling you can load into a hasty brace to steady a shot. Who might still want one
Not nobody. If the rifle is slung all day and shouldered rarely, and the appeal is that it stays put with zero input, a three-point still delivers. Some shooters have years of reps on one and are faster with it than they will ever be with something new. Muscle memory is not free to replace.
A three-point still makes sense if
- You want retention with no adjustment input at all
- You trained on one and your reps are already banked
- The rifle spends far more time carried than shouldered
- You are running iron sights with a clear receiver top and can route the webbing well clear of the ejection port
Move to an adjustable two-point if
- You shoot from the sling and want to brace against it
- You work in and out of vehicles or tight interiors
- You run an optic, a light, or anything the webbing can cross
- You want less to snag and less to explain
- You want the option to convert to one-point for close work
Switching to a two-point
- Unload and verify
Magazine out, bolt locked back, chamber checked by eye and by finger. Do this every time before hands go on the rifle.
- Strip the old sling completely
Take the body loop off too. Half-converted setups leave a spare strap hanging that does nothing but catch on things.
- Pick two points on one side

- Decide forward or rearward on the front point
Forward gives a longer span, so the rifle rides more level and swings less. Rearward gives a shorter span, so it sits tighter and comes up faster, with more barrel hanging past the front point and a muzzle that rides lower. Watch where it points.
- Set the length in your real kit
Wear the jacket or carrier you actually use. Shoulder the rifle, cinch the tab, then run slack. If you cannot do both one handed without looking, the tab is on the wrong side.
- Capture the tail and check your mounts
Run the loose end through a keeper. Then check the mounts: most QD sockets are threaded installs and can work loose, so treat them like any other fastener. Spring-plunger stud swivels are quick-detach hardware too and deserve the same check.
A quick-detach socket does not fail the way stitching fails, but it has its own failure mode: the release button can be pressed by a plate carrier, a pack strap, or a barricade you lean into. Position the socket where gear does not sit on it.

Is a 3 point sling for AR15 use still safe?
It is not unsafe by design. The concerns are practical: webbing near the ejection port can foul brass, and the extra loops catch on gear and door handles. Route it well clear of the port and manage the loops and it functions. Most shooters decide the management burden is not worth it.
Why did most shooters move away from them?
Adjustable two-points arrived with the same hands-free retention, no webbing on the rifle, less to snag, and the ability to brace a shot. When one option does the same job with fewer downsides, the switch follows.
Can a three-point be used with an optic?

Does a two-point actually retain the rifle as well?
Yes, once cinched. Pull the adjuster tab and the rifle locks against your torso. The difference is that a three-point retains with no input while a two-point retains after one pull. That one pull is the trade, and most shooters take it.
What about a one-point instead?
A one-point is fast to shoulder and transitions between shoulders freely, but the rifle hangs muzzle down and swings when you move. A plain one-point loop also puts the whole weight of the rifle on one shoulder. An H-harness spreads that load across both shoulders, though it does not stop the swing.
