Your ar15 sling attachment points are the two spots where the sling meets the rifle: one forward near the handguard, one at the rear by the stock or receiver end plate. Where you put them decides how the rifle hangs and how fast it comes up.
A forward front point means a longer span and a more level rifle. A rearward one is faster to shoulder, but more barrel hangs past the anchor and the muzzle rides lower.
What an attachment point has to do
A sling does two jobs. It carries the rifle when your hands are busy, and it holds the gun against your body when you let go. Both jobs run through the attachment points, so the webbing is only as good as the two anchors it hangs from.
The span between those anchors sets the geometry. A long span spreads the rifle’s weight across a wider arc, so the gun hangs closer to level and swings less when you walk, kneel, or turn. A short span pulls the ends of the sling together: the rifle sits tighter to the chest and comes up quicker, but more barrel hangs past the front anchor, so the muzzle drops and needs watching. Pick the span on purpose instead of bolting the sling to whatever hole was closest.
The front point: forward for control, rearward for speed
The front anchor has the most influence over how the rifle behaves, because it is the one you can slide along the longest run of rail. On a modern handguard you have a row of M-LOK or KeyMod slots and a choice of where the mount lands.
Push it forward and the span gets longer. The rifle hangs more level, rolls less against your chest, and stops slapping your leg when you walk. Pull it rearward and the span shortens: the rifle comes up faster because there is less webbing to take up, and it sits tighter to the body when you drop it. The cost is real. A lot more barrel now sticks out past the anchor, so the muzzle hangs low and swings freely. That is a muzzle discipline problem before it is a comfort problem, and it is the most common reason someone hates how their rifle carries.

Two limits on how far forward you can go. Heat: do not put a mount where the webbing ends up over the gas block area after a string of fire. And hand position: if the mount sits where your thumb wants to be, you will fight it every time you shoulder the gun. Move it a slot rather than changing your grip.
The rear point: end plate, stock, or receiver
The rear anchor moves far less than the front one, but it still has three common homes on an AR-15.

End plates are the common upgrade because they are cheap and put the anchor in a predictable spot. Just remember the castle nut has to be properly torqued and staked going back on. If that is not your job, a stock-mounted option gets you most of the way there.
Keep both points on the same side
This costs nothing and fixes more complaints than any other adjustment. Both attachment points belong on the same side of the rifle, or on the centerline. Front on the left and rear on the right forces a half twist into the webbing every time you sling up. A twisted sling does not lie flat on your shoulder, it bites, and it will not run smoothly through an adjuster. People blame the sling for months when the fix is moving one mount to the other side of the handguard.
Hang the rifle on your body and look at the front run of webbing. If you see the printed or textured face at the front and the plain face at the rear, you have a twist. Move a mount. Do not train around it.
Which side? Match your shooting hand. A right-handed shooter usually runs both points on the left side so the webbing crosses the chest cleanly. Left-handed shooters mirror it. If you shoot from both shoulders, a centerline or top-mounted front point is the compromise, and a sling that converts from two-point to one-point earns its keep here.
QD sockets, loops, and stud swivels
Get the terminology straight, because it causes bad purchases. “QD” means quick detach, and more than one kind of hardware qualifies.
- Push-button QD swivels and sockets. A socket accepts a swivel with a spring-loaded button and locking balls. Fast, rotates freely, and the standard on modern rifles.
- Spring-plunger stud swivels. The older sling stud system on hunting stocks is itself quick detach hardware. A plunger retracts and the swivel comes off the stud. Using “QD” for only push-button parts confuses people who already run studs.
- Fixed loops and pass-throughs. No hardware. The webbing threads through a slot, triangle, or loop and stays there. Nothing to release, nothing to lose, slowest to remove.
Now the honest part about QD. Almost every QD socket on an AR-15 is a threaded install: an end plate held by the castle nut, an M-LOK adapter with two screws, a screw-in cup. Threads work loose under recoil and handling. QD is faster than a loop, but it is not immune to backing out, and a socket that has loosened feels fine right up until it does not.
The failure mode unique to push-button QD is the release button getting pressed by something other than your thumb: a cummerbund, a seat belt, a pack strap. It is not common, but it is why some shooters run a loop at the rear where gear rides against the gun and a QD up front. How to set your ar15 sling attachment points
- Unload and verify
Remove the magazine, lock the bolt to the rear, and look and feel inside the chamber and magazine well. Confirm both are empty before handling the rifle for fitting. You will be letting go of the gun during this.
- Set the rear point first
Pick the end plate, stock socket, or stock loop, on your dominant-hand side. This anchor rarely moves once set, so build the front around it.
- Hang the rifle and find level
Put the front mount roughly mid-handguard, sling up, and let the rifle hang. Note whether the muzzle points at your feet or well out in front of them.
- Move the front mount one slot at a time
Forward brings the muzzle up and settles the rifle. Rearward speeds up the mount and pulls the gun tighter. Change one slot, hang it, feel it.
- Shoulder it ten times
From a hang, bring the rifle up to a firing position and back down, ten reps on each side you shoot from. Anything that catches or bites shows itself before rep ten.
- Threadlock, torque, recheck
Snug the screws to spec with blue threadlocker, then check them again after the next two range sessions. Threaded QD hardware works loose quietly.
Mistakes that show up on the range
The first is picking the mount before picking the position. People buy hardware from a photo, bolt it to the front-most slot because that looks right, and never test anything else. Ten minutes of moving one mount does more for carry comfort than any amount of webbing shopping.
The second is treating the front anchor as a fixed part of the rifle. It is the most adjustable thing on the gun, and a setup dialed in over a t-shirt feels different over a plate carrier.
The third is mismatched hardware. A swivel that fits loosely in a socket rattles, wears, and eventually gets sloppy enough to be a real problem. Frequently asked questions
Where is the best front sling attachment point on an AR-15?
There is no single best spot. Farther forward gives a longer span, a more level rifle, and better support in hasty sling positions. Farther back gives a faster mount and a tighter carry at the cost of a lower muzzle. Start mid-handguard and move one slot at a time.
Can the front and rear points be on opposite sides?
They can, but they should not be. Opposite sides put a half twist in the webbing every time you sling up, which makes the sling bite your shoulder and drag through the adjuster. Keep both on the same side, or use a centerline front mount.
Do QD sling mounts come loose?

Do I need a QD mount at all?
