A 2 point sling for AR15 rifles attaches at two places on the gun, typically one point out on the handguard and one at the rear of the receiver or stock, and carries the weight across your torso. It is the default carry method for a general purpose rifle because it does two jobs at once: it holds the gun still while you move, and it steadies the gun while you shoot.
The cost is transition speed. Swinging a two-point to the support shoulder takes an extra beat. For most shooters that beat is worth paying, because everything else the sling does gets easier.
Why the 2 point sling for AR15 builds is the default
Two attachment points give the webbing a fixed span to work inside, and that span is what turns a strap into a tool. Pull the rifle down and out against the sling and you get tension you can shoot against, which steadies the gun in standing and kneeling positions where you have no other support. Let the sling out and the rifle hangs flat against your chest or across your back, and it stays there while you climb a ladder or walk a fence line.
A single attachment point cannot do the second part. The rifle pivots around one anchor and swings whenever you move. That swing is sometimes acceptable, but it is a permanent feature of the layout, not a setup problem you can tune out. If you want the rifle to stay put with your hands off it, you want two points.
Two-points also scale. The same layout works on a light carbine and on a heavier build with optics and a light, and spreading the weight across two anchors keeps the load off one shoulder and off your neck.
It does not mean fixed length. Every serious two-point has a quick adjuster that lets you go from slack carry to tight against the body in one pull. A sling with no adjuster is a carry strap, not a shooting sling.
Front point position changes how the rifle rides
This is the single biggest setup variable, and most people never touch it. Where you put the front attachment on the handguard decides how the rifle behaves when your hands come off it.
Move the front point forward and the span between your two attachment points gets longer. A longer span makes the rifle ride more level and swing less. It sits calmer on your body when you jog, kneel or turn. This is the setting most people are happier with for general carry and for anything involving movement over distance.
Move the front point rearward and the span gets shorter. The rifle comes to the shoulder faster and sits tighter against your chest, which is good in vehicles, in doorways and anywhere you are working in tight space. The tradeoff is that more barrel now hangs out past the front attachment, so the muzzle rides lower and needs watching. If you take this setting, get used to checking where the muzzle is pointed every time you stand up or lean over.
Keep both points on the same side
Put the front attachment on one side of the rifle and the rear attachment on the other and you force a half twist into the webbing. That twist never goes away. It works against the adjuster, it puts the strap edge-on against your neck, and it makes the rifle sit crooked no matter how you tune the length.
The fix is simple. Both points go on the same side, or on the centerline. If your rear anchor is a centerline position like a stock or receiver end, then either handguard side works and you pick by which shoulder you shoot from. If your rear anchor is offset to one side, the front one goes on that same side.
Nine times out of ten, a sling that “does not sit right” is either crossed side to side or routed through a piece of gear. Take it off the rifle, lay the webbing flat on a bench, and reattach without letting it roll.
The adjuster is the part you actually use
You will touch the adjuster more than any other part of the sling. It takes the rifle from hanging loose while you work to locked tight against your chest while you run. Whatever style it uses, the test is the same: can you go from long to short with your support hand, without looking, while the rifle is in the way?

Attachment hardware: QD, loops and studs
The sling is only as good as what holds it to the rifle. Three families cover almost everything.
QD sockets and swivels. A push-button swivel drops into a socket and locks. Sockets come from end plates, M-LOK adapters and screw-in cups, so most are threaded installs, and threaded installs can work loose over time. QD is faster to attach and detach than anything else, but it is not immune to loosening, so check the socket housing and not just the swivel. Its own distinct failure mode is the release button getting pressed by a plate carrier, a pack strap or a door frame, so keep the button facing where gear will not push it. Loops and webbing pass-throughs. A loop routed through a handguard slot or around a stock has no moving parts to fail, and it is the cheapest option. Downside: you cannot pull the sling off in a hurry, and a loop can shift under load unless it seats in a slot that holds it.
Sling studs. Common on stocks and forends carried over from the hunting world. A spring-plunger stud swivel is itself quick-detach hardware, so a stud setup is not automatically the permanent option people assume. Studs take concentrated load in a small screw, so inspect the screw and the swivel loop regularly.

Setting up a two-point from scratch
- Unload and verify
Remove the magazine, lock the bolt to the rear, and physically look and feel inside the chamber and magazine well to confirm both are empty. Do this before you handle the rifle for setup, because you will be moving it around and working the controls.
- Pick your rear point
Rear of the receiver or on the stock. Centerline positions are the most forgiving. Note which side it favors if it is offset.
- Match the front point to that side
Same side as the rear, or centerline. Start with the front point roughly at the middle of the handguard so you have room to move it either way.
- Set carry length wearing your real gear
Plate carrier, jacket, pack, whatever you actually wear. Length set in a t-shirt is wrong every time you gear up.
- Test the swing
Hands off the rifle. Walk, turn, kneel, stand. If the muzzle wanders more than you like, move the front point forward. If the rifle is slow coming to the shoulder, move it rearward and accept the lower muzzle.
- Test the adjuster under load
Cinch it tight with your support hand only, then let it back out. If you need two hands or your eyes, the adjuster sits in the wrong place on the strap.
- Recheck the hardware
After the first range trip and after any hard use, put a wrench or driver on every threaded mount. Sockets and studs back out. That is normal, and catching it early is the point.
Two-point against the other layouts
Choose a two-point when
- You carry the rifle for long stretches and want the weight spread
- You want a stable hold with no other support available
- You need the rifle to stay put while your hands do something else
- You want one layout that works for range, patrol, hunting and truck gun duty

Frequently asked questions
Is a two-point sling better than a one-point for an AR-15?
For general use, yes. A two-point holds the rifle still when your hands are off it and gives you tension to shoot against. A one-point wins only on transition speed and on getting the rifle away from your body quickly. Pick based on which of those you do more.
Where should the front sling point go on the handguard?
Start in the middle and move from there. Forward gives you a longer span, a more level ride and less swing. Rearward gives you a faster shoulder mount and a tighter carry, at the cost of more barrel hanging past the point and a lower muzzle to keep track of.
Can I put the front point on one side and the rear on the other?
No. That forces a half twist into the webbing that you can never tune out. Keep both points on the same side of the rifle, or on the centerline.
Are QD sling mounts reliable?
Yes, with two caveats. Most sockets are threaded installs, so they work loose and need checking like any other fastener. And the release button can be pressed by gear, so orient it away from your carrier and pack straps.
Do I need a padded sling?
Only for a heavy rifle carried a long time. Padding adds bulk and can slow the adjuster. A properly set two-point already spreads the load across your torso, which does more for comfort than padding does.
How tight should a two-point sling be?
Two settings, not one. Loose enough that the rifle hangs clear and your hands are free, and tight enough on the short setting that the rifle cannot move against your chest. Getting between those two with one pull is the adjuster’s whole job.
