A 12-gauge that has been out in salt spray, rain or marsh mud needs more than the usual bore pass. The order that matters: get water and grit off the gun in the truck before it sits, strip it further than you normally would once home, dry everything including the parts you cannot see, clean the bore, then re-oil and leave the gun out where air moves before it goes in a case.

The urgency is simple. Salt does not need long to start working, and mud holds moisture against steel long after the outside looks dry. If you only have time for one thing on the drive home, it is getting the salt water off.

What salt water and marsh mud actually do

Fresh water on a gun is a nuisance. Salt water is a different problem, because the salt stays behind after the water is gone and keeps pulling moisture out of the air onto the steel. Wiping a gun dry after salt exposure does not remove the salt, only the carrier. That is why a gun can look dry going into the safe and come out with orange freckles under the receiver a week later.

Marsh and creek mud does something else. It is abrasive, it packs into every gap, and it holds water like a sponge. Mud sitting between a barrel and a magazine tube, or packed behind a butt pad, keeps that surface wet for days no matter how dry the room is. Working an action with grit in it does damage no amount of oil undoes afterwards. Blowing sand adds a third failure mode: it lodges in springs and detents, and a gun that cycled fine at the end of the hunt can bind next time out.

Triage in the truck

What you do in the parking area matters more than what you do at the bench, because it decides how long the salt and mud get to sit. Keep a kit in the vehicle year round: a jug of clean fresh water, old towels, compressed air or a hand pump, and an oiled rag in a sealed bag.

  1. Unload completely before anything else

    Muzzle in a safe direction. Work the action open, check the chamber by sight and by feel, then check the magazine tube separately. Cycle several times and watch what comes out. Do not start wiping a gun down with shells still in it.

  2. Get the heavy mud off while it is still wet

    Dried mud has to be scraped, and scraping is how finishes get ruined. Flush it with fresh water and knock it out of the gaps with your fingers and a towel.

  3. Rinse salt exposure deliberately

    If the gun took salt water or spray, plain fresh water is the tool. You are not cleaning yet, you are diluting and carrying salt away. Rinse the outside, the action area, and around the magazine cap and swivels.

  4. Drain it muzzle-down

    Hold the gun muzzle-down and work the action so water runs out rather than back into the receiver. Blow out the visible pockets if you have air.

  5. Towel it and put a light oil film on external steel

    A holding measure for the drive, not the real job. An even film buys you the hours it takes to get home.

  6. Do not zip it into a soft case

    A wet gun in a padded case is a gun in a humidity chamber. Lay it on a towel, muzzle down where you can, and get air to it.

Clearing the gun and setting up

At home, clear the gun again from scratch. Chamber, then magazine tube, both checked by sight and by touch, muzzle in a safe direction throughout. Remove every round from the room, including whatever is loose in your jacket pocket. A gun you cleared two hours ago in a parking lot is not a gun you have cleared at your bench.

Solvents: ventilation, and never mix

Work with a window or door open, or a fan moving air, not in a sealed garage or closet. Never mix cleaning products. Bore solvents, degreasers, ammonia-based copper removers and household cleaners can react with each other and produce genuinely dangerous fumes, and mixing them also ruins their effectiveness. Use one product, let it work, remove it, then use the next if you need it. Read the label on every container, wear gloves where it says to, and keep solvents away from primers, powder and open flame.

Lay out the gun’s manual with the tools. Wet-weather cleaning takes you further into the gun than a routine wipe-down does, and a manual saves you from the two classic mistakes: taking apart something never meant to come apart, and reassembling a part rotated the wrong way.

Stripping and drying

Go further than usual. The whole reason a wet hunt is different is that water and grit end up where a normal clean never reaches. At minimum: separate the barrel, pull the forend, remove the butt pad if water could have got behind it, and drop the trigger group if your gun allows that without special tools. Standing water and packed mud in those spaces is normal after a bad day, and it is exactly what causes the rust you find later.

Dry mechanically before you dry chemically. Towels, patches, cotton swabs and compressed air do the bulk of it. A water-displacing product helps where you cannot reach, but it does not replace physically getting water out. Pay attention to blind holes, spring channels, the underside of the receiver and any recess a screw head sits in, because those hold water long after the flats are dry.

Remember that flushing removes oil as well as salt. Bare steel with no film on it is more vulnerable than it was before you started, so re-oiling after a rinse is not optional.

The bore

Run a dry patch through first and see what comes out. Water, mud or plug material in a barrel is a safety issue rather than a cleanliness issue, and it has to be found before the gun is loaded again. Look through the bore against a light and confirm it is clear end to end.

Then clean normally: solvent on a patch or a bore snake, a brush if there is real fouling, patches until they come out clean, then a light protective film. Push from the chamber end where the design allows, and use a guide so the rod is not riding on the chamber mouth.

The choke tube is the part people skip. Water and salt sit in the muzzle threads, and a tube left in after a wet day can seize. Back it out, clean the tube and the barrel threads, apply fresh anti-seize or whatever grease your manufacturer specifies, and reinstall. Do this every time after salt exposure, not occasionally.

Gas guns and pump guns

Semi-auto gas systems

A gas gun has a working system a wet hunt affects directly. Water and grit reach the gas ports, the piston and its seals, and that residue mixes with combustion fouling into something harder to shift than either alone. Prioritise that area once the gun is stripped: clean the piston, cylinder and rings per your manual, and get the carbon off rather than smearing it around.

Then be careful with oil. Gas systems generally want to run dry or very lightly lubricated in the working areas, because oil there collects carbon and grit into a paste that eventually causes short-stroking. Heavy oil is not insurance. Follow what the maker says for your gun specifically, since inertia-driven semi-autos have different needs again.

Pump actions

A pump gun has fewer places for water to hide in the operating system, but the action bars and the rails they ride on are exposed, and grit there is felt immediately as a gritty or sticky stroke. Clean the bars and rails, check the tube inside and out, and pay attention to the shell latches and the carrier, where grit collects and binding shows up first.

Both types share one habit worth building: cycle the empty gun slowly by hand after reassembly and feel for anything that is not smooth. Grit announces itself under a slow stroke long before it causes a malfunction at speed.

Wood versus synthetic stocks

Wood

  • Water gets into end grain, especially at the head of the stock where it meets the receiver
  • Dry it slowly at room temperature, never with a heat gun or against a radiator
  • Remove the pad and check the recess, a common water trap
  • Re-treat the finish appropriately and check for swelling around the inletting

Synthetic

  • The material does not care, but water still sits inside hollow stocks and behind the pad
  • Find the drain paths and use them, and tip the stock to check nothing sloshes
  • Solvents can craze or discolour some polymers, so keep bore chemicals off the stock
  • The metal parts attached to it rust exactly the same as on a wood gun

On either type, the joint where stock meets receiver is a genuine trap. Water wicks in, sits against the tang or the stock bolt, and rusts a bolt you never look at. If the gun took a real soaking, pull the stock and check.

The hardware everyone forgets

This is what separates a wet-weather clean from a normal one. Every item here is somewhere people find rust months later.

  • Sling swivels and studs. A swivel traps water where it pivots and where the loop passes through the stud. Take the sling off, work the swivel through its motion, dry it and put a drop of oil in the joint. Check the stud is still tight while you are there, since a loose stud is the usual cause of a stock cracking around it.
  • Under the sling itself. Wet webbing pressed against steel for a day holds moisture there. Take the sling off, dry the gun underneath it, and hang the sling separately rather than storing a damp sling on a stored gun.
  • Magazine cap threads. Salt in threads is how a cap seizes. Take it off, clean both sets of threads, oil or grease per your manual, and put it back.
  • Every screw head. Trigger guard, tang, stock bolt, base and optic screws. The recess around a head holds water, and the screw is often a different steel from the parts around it. Dry each recess, then check the screws are tight.
  • The butt pad and its screws. Those holes go into the stock and water follows them in. Pad screws are frequently found rusted on guns that otherwise look perfect.
  • Optic and mount hardware. Rings, bases and rail sections trap water at their contact surfaces, and that interface is out of sight until something is loose.

Rust prevention and storage

Finish with a light protective film on external steel, applied with a cloth so it is even rather than pooled. More oil is not more protection. Excess runs into wood, softens some finishes and collects dust, and pooled oil in a stock recess causes its own damage over time.

Then leave the gun out: standing in a rack, in a room with moving air, for a day or two after a wet trip. A case straight after a soaking traps whatever moisture remains and holds it against the steel. If your safe has a dehumidifier rod or desiccant, confirm it is working and recharge desiccant on the schedule the maker gives.

Come back a week later. Pull the gun out, check under the forend, around the swivels and screw heads, and check the bore. Surface rust caught at a week is a wipe with oil and a light pass. The same rust found next season is pitting, and pitting does not come out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to rinse a shotgun with fresh water after salt exposure?

Yes, if it took salt water or salt spray. Wiping alone leaves salt on the steel, and the salt keeps attracting moisture. A rinse with clean fresh water carries it away. The important follow-up is that a rinse also strips oil, so the gun must be dried thoroughly and re-oiled straight afterward.

How soon after a wet hunt do I have to clean the gun?

Do the truck triage the same day, before the drive. The full strip and clean should happen as soon as you reasonably can, not next weekend. What you are racing is moisture trapped where you cannot see it, and that starts working immediately rather than waiting for you.

Can I dry a wet stock with a hair dryer or a heat source?

Do not use heat on a wood stock. Forced heat drives moisture the wrong way, can lift or check a finish, and can move the wood in the inletting. Room-temperature air and time are the right approach. Moving air helps, heat does not.

Should I oil the inside of a gas system after a wet hunt?

Clean it, but be careful with lubricant. Gas system components generally want to run dry or very lightly lubricated, because oil there traps carbon and grit into a paste that eventually causes cycling problems. Check the manual for your specific gun, since manufacturers differ and inertia-driven semi-autos have different requirements from gas guns.
