Picking a sling for 12 gauge shotgun use is mostly a weight problem. A loaded pump runs heavier than most carbines, carries that weight forward of your hands, and delivers recoil that will move a badly set sling out of position with every shot.
Width, mounting position and adjuster type all follow from that. A sling that works fine on a light semi auto in the timber can be genuinely unpleasant on a loaded 12 gauge after a couple of miles.
Why 12 gauge is the hard case
Three things stack up. The gun itself is heavy. The ammunition is heavy, and a full magazine tube adds meaningful weight right at the front where it has the most leverage. And the barrel is long, so all of that sits well forward of the point you are carrying from.
The result is a gun that wants to rotate nose down and that puts a concentrated load on a narrow strip of your shoulder. Neither is a problem for ten minutes. Both are a problem for a day.
Most people size a sling against the gun as it sits in the safe. Weigh it the way you will carry it: magazine full, sidesaddle loaded if you run one, light or optic fitted. That is the load your shoulder actually sees, and it is often a pound or more heavier than the bare gun.
What 3 inch and 3.5 inch guns add
Chambering is a carry decision as well as a ballistics one. A gun built to take longer shells is usually a heavier gun before you put anything in it, and then the shells themselves are heavier per round. Both differences land in the same place.

The awkward part is that all of it goes into the magazine tube, forward of the point you carry from. Weight out there acts on a longer arm, so it does not just make the gun heavier, it makes it want to rotate nose down harder. Everything that argued for wider webbing and a forward front point argues for it more.
Webbing width and shoulder load
Pressure is load divided by area. You cannot change the load, so the only variable available is how much shoulder the webbing covers. Wider webbing spreads the same weight over more surface and the difference is easy to feel on a heavy gun.

Wider is not automatically better. Padding adds bulk that gets in the way when you shoulder the gun quickly, and a very wide sling is slower to adjust because there is more webbing to move through the adjuster. For most 12 gauge work the middle option is the honest answer.
Recoil and sling position
A 12 gauge moves you. If the sling is routed where it can sit between the stock and your shoulder pocket, recoil will drive the webbing into you and the gun will shift position shot to shot.

Mount the gun and look at where the webbing sits
The rear section should run clear of the pocket where the stock meets your shoulder. If webbing is trapped there, the sling is either too short or mounted too high on the stock.

A setup that looks right static can walk out of position under recoil. Take a few shots and see whether the sling has migrated.

Watch the front swivel with a heavy load
Recoil works threaded hardware loose over time. If you shoot slugs or heavy waterfowl loads, check the front stud before each outing rather than each season.
On a 12 gauge with a forward front swivel, your support hand often ends up near the mount. A metal swivel between your hand and the forend under heavy recoil is a good way to get pinched. Check your hand position at the sling mount before you shoot a full box.
Sling tension and a repeatable mount
Recoil is one half of the shot to shot consistency problem. The sling is the half nobody looks at. If the webbing loads the gun differently every time you bring it up, your shoulder and cheek pressure change with it, and on a gun with sights that moves where the shot goes.
There are two defensible ways to run this. The failure is doing neither consistently.
Sling as part of the position

For most shotgun work the second is correct. Release to shooting length, mount cleanly, and let the sling do nothing until you are finished. The first is a rifle technique that transfers to a slug gun from a sitting position, but it earns nothing on a gun you are swinging.
If you suspect the sling is moving your point of impact, shoot one group with it released and one with it loaded the way the carry setting leaves it. On a bead gun you may see nothing. On a slug gun with sights the difference is usually visible.
Balance and where to mount
Where the front point sits decides how the gun rides. Further forward supports the weight nearer the muzzle, so the gun hangs more level and moves less on the walk. Further back shortens the span, sits the gun tighter against you, and gets it to the shoulder faster, but leaves more barrel hanging past the front point.
For a 12 gauge covering ground, forward wins. You carry far more than you shoot, and the level ride is worth more than a fraction of a second on the mount. For a duty or defensive 12 gauge, the reverse applies.
Slug guns are a different carry
A dedicated slug gun sits between a shotgun and a rifle in every way that matters to a sling. It is aimed rather than pointed, it usually wears an optic, and it is generally the heaviest 12 gauge anyone carries. It is also carried like a deer rifle: a walk in the dark, a long sit, a walk out.
The optic is the first thing that changes. A sling that was fine on a bead gun can now run across a scope tube or a mount, which fouls the mount and eventually marks the finish. Check where the webbing lies slung and shouldered, and move the rear point rather than live with it.
Recoil is the second. Slugs are the heaviest thing most people put through a 12 gauge, so everything in the recoil section applies with more force. Check threaded studs and sockets before every outing, not every season.
The third is that point of impact matters here in a way it does not on a bird gun. Any inconsistency the sling introduces at the mount shows up on the animal. Decide whether the sling is part of your shooting position, then be consistent about it.
