Sling attachment guidance for the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22. Check your exact configuration and both connectors before choosing the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling (DRS). Factory attachment points do not by themselves confirm a direct fit.
Front attachment
M-LOK handguard slot — aftermarket attachment option.
Smith & Wesson specifies a 10-inch M&P slim handguard with Magpul M-LOK on the M&P15-22 Sport, and the manual has a section on fitting M-LOK accessory rails. A slot needs a sling mount added before a sling can attach. The manual notes the handguard is polymer, which affects how M-LOK hardware is tightened.
Aftermarket attachment option: a webbing slot is not a QD cup or proof that a hook fits. Confirm the connector and webbing dimensions for this opening.
Rear attachment
Six-position stock attachment — not confirmed for every configuration.
The M&P15-22 manual labels the stock and its position lock but does not identify a sling attachment point. Inspect the stock on your rifle for a sling loop or slot. Fixed-stock compliant models and the Magpul MOE SL versions use different stocks and should be checked separately.
Attachment details are not confirmed for every configuration. Check the exact model and manufacturer documentation before buying hardware.
Why this sling on the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22
A rimfire spends its life being carried around a property, a range or a trapline. It is light enough that people put up with a bad sling — but the same cinch-and-release that suits a duty rifle just makes it easier to keep both hands free.
The McLean design is a two-point sling with a patented retention system: it cinches tight to hold the rifle against your body hands-free, then releases into a ready position in one pull. It ships in one size and adjusts, so there is no length to choose.
Fitting it
- Clear the rifle. Unload and clear it following the firearm manufacturer’s instructions before fitting any accessories.
- Front: confirm a compatible connector and follow the sling and attachment manufacturer instructions.
- Rear: confirm the matching connector for your stock or rear attachment; do not assume a slot, stud and QD cup are interchangeable.
- Adjust wearing your kit. A setting dialled in without a vest comes up short once it is on.
- Check the transition. It should shoulder without pulling tight across your chest.
Choosing hardware for your configuration
The M&P15-22 is a dedicated .22 LR rifle with polymer receivers and its own handguard, so M&P15 centerfire parts and guidance should not be assumed to carry over. Earlier M&P15-22 rifles used a quad-rail handguard, not the M-LOK handguard documented here.
An M-LOK slot, a Picatinny rail and a QD cup are separate interfaces. Decide which mount the front of the sling needs, then check the rear stock for an existing loop or slot. Smith & Wesson’s published material does not confirm either sling point for you.
Questions
Does the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling (DRS) fit the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22?
Compatibility depends on the exact configuration and connectors. Confirm both attachment points and the connector fit before ordering. A factory attachment point does not by itself confirm a direct fit for the McLean sling.
Do I need a snap hook for the front of my Smith & Wesson M&P15-22?
The McLean sling already carries a front hook. Choose a compatible attachment loop or swivel for that hook, and confirm its clearance and closure on your exact setup before buying additional hardware.
What do I need to buy for the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22?
Front: Aftermarket attachment option: a webbing slot is not a QD cup or proof that a hook fits. Confirm the connector and webbing dimensions for this opening. Rear: Attachment details are not confirmed for every configuration. Check the exact model and manufacturer documentation before buying hardware.
What length sling do I need for the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22?
There is no length to choose. The sling ships in one size and adjusts, so the same sling covers carry and cinched retention. Set it wearing the kit you actually carry in — a setting dialled in without a vest or heavy coat comes up short once it is on.
