Sling for the M4 Carbine — Fitment & Mounts

Sling attachment guidance for the M4 Carbine. Check your exact configuration and both connectors before choosing the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling (DRS). Factory attachment points do not by themselves confirm a direct fit.

Front attachment

Forward sling swivel at the front sight base — factory attachment point.

Colt’s operator’s manual for the M4 Carbine instructs the user to insert the sling through the forward sling swivel. U.S. Army TC 3-22.9 likewise lists a sling swivel as part of the barrel assembly. It is a swivel loop, not a push-button QD socket.

Factory attachment point: confirm the connector fits and closes fully on the exact attachment. The existence of a loop does not establish McLean connector clearance.

Rear attachment

Buttstock sling slot — factory attachment point.

Colt’s manual instructs the user to attach the sling through the slot in the sliding buttstock. That slot takes webbing directly. A replacement stock may offer a different slot, a loop or QD cups, so check the stock actually fitted.

Factory attachment point: a webbing slot is not a QD cup or proof that a hook fits. Confirm the connector and webbing dimensions for this opening.

Why this sling on the M4 Carbine

An AR spends far more time carried than fired — on a patrol, walking a treeline, working a barricade. The problem a two-point solves badly is the transition: loose enough to shoulder fast, and it swings when your hands are busy. Cinched retention fixes that without a second sling.

The McLean design is a two-point sling with a patented retention system: it cinches tight to hold the rifle against your body hands-free, then releases into a ready position in one pull. It ships in one size and adjusts, so there is no length to choose.

Fitting it

  1. Clear the rifle. Unload and clear it following the firearm manufacturer’s instructions before fitting any accessories.
  2. Front: confirm a compatible connector and follow the sling and attachment manufacturer instructions.
  3. Rear: confirm the matching connector for your stock or rear attachment; do not assume a slot, stud and QD cup are interchangeable.
  4. Adjust wearing your kit. A setting dialled in without a vest comes up short once it is on.
  5. Check the transition. It should shoulder without pulling tight across your chest.

Choosing hardware for your configuration

The Colt manual cited is the 1993 operator’s manual covering the M16A2 Carbine, Commando, 9mm SMG and M4 Carbine. Later military carbines with rail systems and side sling adapters, and current commercial Colt carbines with M-LOK handguards or different stocks, should be checked against their own documentation.

A sling swivel, a webbing slot and a QD cup are different connections. A QD swivel needs a socket to seat in, and a rail or M-LOK handguard needs a mount added before it offers one. Record what is at each end of the carbine before choosing connectors.

Questions

Does the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling (DRS) fit the M4 Carbine?

Compatibility depends on the exact configuration and connectors. Confirm both attachment points and the connector fit before ordering. A factory attachment point does not by itself confirm a direct fit for the McLean sling.

Do I need a snap hook for the front of my M4 Carbine?

The McLean sling already carries a front hook. Choose a compatible attachment loop or swivel for that hook, and confirm its clearance and closure on your exact setup before buying additional hardware.

What do I need to buy for the M4 Carbine?

Front: Factory attachment point: confirm the connector fits and closes fully on the exact attachment. The existence of a loop does not establish McLean connector clearance. Rear: Factory attachment point: a webbing slot is not a QD cup or proof that a hook fits. Confirm the connector and webbing dimensions for this opening.

What length sling do I need for the M4 Carbine?

There is no length to choose. The sling ships in one size and adjusts, so the same sling covers carry and cinched retention. Set it wearing the kit you actually carry in — a setting dialled in without a vest or heavy coat comes up short once it is on.
