A sling is a shooting aid before it is anything else, and that is the part of a long range AR 15 setup most shooters skip. Wrapping into a loop or a hasty sling puts tension between your support arm and the rifle, which pulls the stock back into your shoulder and lets webbing and bone hold the gun steady instead of muscle. On a free-float handguard that support costs you nothing at the muzzle. On a forward attachment point that touches the barrel it can move your point of impact, so the mount matters as much as the technique.
Service rifle shooters were winning matches with slings long before bipods were common, and the technique still earns its place. It also has real limits, and this post covers both halves.
Confirm the rifle is unloaded. Remove the magazine, lock the bolt back, look and feel in the chamber, and keep the muzzle in a safe direction while you do it. Fit, adjust and rehearse every position dry first. Only take these positions to live fire once you can build them smoothly, and only on a range with a backstop that can take a round from that position. Watch your muzzle through every transition, because getting into a loop sling moves the rifle around a lot more than shouldering it does.
What sling support actually does
A shooting sling does one job: it replaces muscular effort with structural tension. In an unsupported position your support arm is holding the weight of the rifle, and muscle under load trembles, fatigues and drifts. Loop the sling around that arm and cinch it down, and the weight is now carried by webbing running from the forward attachment point, around your arm, back to the rifle. The arm becomes a strut rather than a lifter.
The second effect matters just as much. Tension in the sling pulls the rifle rearward, seating the buttstock firmly into your shoulder pocket. That does two things. It reduces the small wandering movement that shows up as a wobble in your sight picture, and it makes recoil more consistent, because the rifle is not free to shift a little differently on each shot.
What it does not do is fix anything else. Sling tension will not correct a bad trigger press, will not steady your breathing, and will not compensate for a cheek weld that changes shot to shot. It shrinks the wobble zone. Everything inside that smaller wobble zone is still on you. Shooters who add a sling and see no improvement have usually not run out of stability, they have run out of trigger control.
The loop sling
The loop sling is the full version of the technique and the most stable. The sling is opened up into a loop that goes high around your support arm, above the bicep, then the slack is taken out until the webbing is genuinely tight between your arm and the forward mounting point. Done properly you can let go of the handguard entirely and the rifle stays roughly where it was.
It takes time to build, it needs a sling that will actually loosen and re-tighten, and it is uncomfortable at first. That is normal. The trade is that once it is set, it is the steadiest thing you can do with a rifle short of putting it on a rest.
- Confirm the rifle is clear
Magazine out, bolt locked back, chamber checked visually and by feel. Do all fitting and all early rehearsal dry.
- Open the sling up
Release the adjuster so you have enough slack to pass your support arm through. A quick-adjust sling makes this far less painful than a fixed-length one.
- Get the loop high on the arm
Above the bicep, not on the forearm. Low on the arm the sling slides toward the elbow under tension and the position collapses.
- Pass your hand around and back to the handguard
Your support hand comes over the top of the webbing and back under the handguard, so the sling runs across the back of your hand and wrist.
- Take out the slack
Pull the adjuster until the sling is tight enough that the rifle is being held by the webbing, not by your arm. Tight, not tourniquet tight.
- Build the position, then check natural point of aim
Settle in, close your eyes, breathe, open them. If the sights have moved off target, shift your whole body rather than muscling the rifle back. Muscling defeats the entire point of the sling.
- Dry fire it until it is smooth
Only then take it to live fire, and only with a safe backstop behind the target from that position.

The hasty sling
The hasty sling is the field version. Instead of opening the sling up and threading your arm through a loop, you sweep your support arm through the existing sling and wrap the webbing once around the arm before taking your normal grip on the handguard. It takes a second or two rather than the better part of a minute.
You get less than the loop gives you. A hasty wrap adds meaningful rearward tension, but it does not take the support arm out of the job the way a proper loop does, and it tends to loosen if you move. What it gives you is most of the benefit, immediately, from the sling already on the rifle.
Practically, this is the version most people should learn first. If a hasty wrap does not steady your sight picture at all, the usual culprits are a sling that is too loose to load up or a forward attachment point too far back to generate useful tension.
Sling tension and point of impact
Here is the part that catches people out. A sling under tension is pulling on whatever it is attached to, and if that attachment point loads the barrel, the barrel bends slightly and your shots move. Not by a dramatic amount at close range, but enough to matter at distance, and enough to be maddening because it only appears when you shoot from a sling supported position.
This is why the classic advice around slings and accuracy is really advice about handguards. A free-float handguard attaches only at the receiver and never touches the barrel along its length. Tension applied to a sling stud or a socket on a free-float rail is carried into the handguard and back into the receiver, and the barrel is left alone. A forward mount that clamps to the barrel, or a handguard that rests against the barrel or a front sight base, transmits that tension straight into the barrel.
The honest test is simple and worth doing before you trust a sling supported position at distance. Confirm your zero from a rest with no sling tension, then shoot a group from the sling position you actually intend to use, with the sling loaded exactly as you would load it for real. Compare the group centres. If they overlap, the tension is not moving anything meaningful. If they do not, you now know the size and direction of the shift and can decide whether to change the mount or account for it.
Do that test on a rifle you have already zeroed properly, otherwise you are chasing two variables at once. Prone, sitting and kneeling with a sling
The sling earns different amounts in different positions. Prone gives it the most to work with, since your support elbow is already on the ground. Kneeling gives it the least, because the position itself is the unstable part. Sitting is often the best value in the field: quick to build, and usable on ground where prone fails.
The pattern to notice is that a sling improves a position, it does not replace one. A sloppy kneeling position with a tight sling is still a sloppy kneeling position. Build the bone support first, then add the sling.

Sling and bipod solve different problems
These are not competitors, and treating them as competitors is how shooters end up with the wrong tool deployed. A bipod puts the front of the rifle on the ground and takes the support arm out of the equation entirely. A sling makes your body a better structure. One is a rest, the other is a technique.
A bipod is superior when you have time, ground that suits it, and a position you will hold for a while. A sling is superior when the ground is wrong, the position is not prone, or the shot needs to happen sooner than a bipod can be deployed and loaded. Plenty of rifles carry both, and the shooter picks based on which constraint is binding.

When a sling beats deploying a bipod
The clearest case is time. A hasty wrap is one motion. Deploying a bipod, getting behind it, loading it and settling is a sequence, and if the shot is on a clock the sequence loses.
The second case is ground. Bipods want a reasonably flat surface at roughly the right height. Sloping ground, soft sand, deep snow, rocks and tall vegetation all make them worse or useless. A sling does not care what the ground looks like, because it works against your own body.
The third case is height. If you cannot go prone because the vegetation is taller than the rifle, a bipod on the ground is irrelevant and you need a sitting or kneeling position instead. That is exactly where sling tension is doing the most work, because there is no other support available.

Honest limitations
A tight loop sling restricts blood flow to your support arm. Fingers going numb is common, and it gets worse the longer you stay in position. That is a real constraint on how long a sling supported position is usable, and a reason to build it, shoot, and come out of it rather than sitting in it while you wait.
Bulky clothing changes everything. A sling set for a t-shirt will be far too short over a winter layer or a plate carrier, and a loop that sits correctly on a bare arm can slide badly over slick outerwear. If you shoot in kit, set the sling up in kit.
Some slings resist this use. A sling whose adjuster creeps under sustained load will slowly go slack while you are trying to hold a position, and hardware that flexes or rattles takes tension out of the system. A sling that adjusts fast and then genuinely stays put is what the technique needs, which is why a quick adjustable rifle sling makes loop work far more practical than a fixed strap.

Setting the rifle up for it
Three things on the rifle decide whether sling support works well. A free-float handguard, so tension does not reach the barrel. A forward attachment point far enough out to generate real leverage, since a point too close to the receiver gives you a short, weak triangle. And hardware that does not shift or fail with your body weight hanging off it. Do not assume your particular handguard has a socket, a stud or a slot in the place you want it. Check your own rifle and your own handguard against the manufacturer’s documentation before you buy hardware, because rail patterns and factory fittings vary far more than product photos suggest.

Frequently asked questions
Does a shooting sling really make a difference at distance?
Yes, in unsupported positions. It shrinks your wobble zone and seats the stock consistently in your shoulder, and both of those show up as tighter groups the further out you shoot. It will not outperform a bipod or a bag on good ground, and it does not improve your trigger control, so the gain is real but bounded.
Will sling tension change my zero?
It can, if the sling loads the barrel. A free-float handguard largely removes the problem because tension is carried into the receiver rather than the barrel. Confirm it on your own rifle by shooting a group from a rest with no tension and a group from your loaded sling position, then comparing the group centres.
Can I use a two-point carry sling as a shooting sling?
A hasty wrap works with essentially any two-point sling. A full loop sling needs one that opens up and re-tightens easily, and that holds its adjustment once loaded. A quick-adjust two-point handles both jobs, which is why it is the usual answer for a rifle that has to carry and shoot.
Should I run a sling or a bipod on a long range AR build?
Both, if you can. They cover different situations. The bipod is better when you have prone ground and time, the sling is better when you do not, and the sling is on the rifle anyway because you still have to carry it.
