Sling for the Browning BAR — Fitment & Mounts

Sling attachment guidance for the Browning BAR. Check your exact configuration and both connectors before choosing the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling (DRS). Factory attachment points do not by themselves confirm a direct fit.

Front attachment

Front sling swivel stud — factory attachment point.

Browning’s specification for the BAR MK 3 lists steel integral sling swivel studs, and the discontinued BAR Mark II Satin page states that sling swivel studs are installed. Identify the forward stud under the forearm. A stud needs a stud-mount swivel.

Factory attachment point: a stud needs a compatible sling swivel to provide a loop. Confirm the swivel dimensions and attachment type; the sling hook does not attach directly to a bare stud.

Rear attachment

Rear sling swivel stud — factory attachment point.

The same Browning specifications cover the rear stud on the buttstock of the BAR MK 3 and Mark II sporting rifles. Check the stud on the actual stock, since a replaced stock may carry different hardware.

Factory attachment point: a stud needs a compatible sling swivel to provide a loop. Confirm the swivel dimensions and attachment type; the sling hook does not attach directly to a bare stud.

Why this sling on the Browning BAR

Carry, transition and retention are the three things a sling has to get right. The McLean design covers all three from one setting rather than trading one off against another.

The McLean design is a two-point sling with a patented retention system: it cinches tight to hold the rifle against your body hands-free, then releases into a ready position in one pull. It ships in one size and adjusts, so there is no length to choose.

Fitting it

  1. Clear the rifle. Unload and clear it following the firearm manufacturer’s instructions before fitting any accessories.
  2. Front: confirm a compatible connector and follow the sling and attachment manufacturer instructions.
  3. Rear: confirm the matching connector for your stock or rear attachment; do not assume a slot, stud and QD cup are interchangeable.
  4. Adjust wearing your kit. A setting dialled in without a vest comes up short once it is on.
  5. Check the transition. It should shoulder without pulling tight across your chest.

Choosing hardware for your configuration

This guide concerns the Browning BAR sporting autoloader, not the M1918 military rifle. Browning’s pages document studs on the BAR MK 3, MK 3 Stalker and Mark II Satin. Older Belgian-made and Type 1 rifles were not checked against a Browning document.

Browning’s newer BAR MK 4 Hunter Composite is listed differently, with a stud plus two QD cups. A QD cup takes a push-button swivel and a stud takes a stud swivel. Check which generation and stock you have before choosing connectors.

Questions

Does the McLean Dynamic Retention Sling (DRS) fit the Browning BAR?

Compatibility depends on the exact configuration and connectors. Confirm both attachment points and the connector fit before ordering. A factory attachment point does not by itself confirm a direct fit for the McLean sling.

Do I need a snap hook for the front of my Browning BAR?

The McLean sling already carries a front hook. Choose a compatible attachment loop or swivel for that hook, and confirm its clearance and closure on your exact setup before buying additional hardware.

What do I need to buy for the Browning BAR?

Front: Factory attachment point: a stud needs a compatible sling swivel to provide a loop. Confirm the swivel dimensions and attachment type; the sling hook does not attach directly to a bare stud. Rear: Factory attachment point: a stud needs a compatible sling swivel to provide a loop. Confirm the swivel dimensions and attachment type; the sling hook does not attach directly to a bare stud.

What length sling do I need for the Browning BAR?

There is no length to choose. The sling ships in one size and adjusts, so the same sling covers carry and cinched retention. Set it wearing the kit you actually carry in — a setting dialled in without a vest or heavy coat comes up short once it is on.
