Padding earns its place in one situation: a heavy gun, carried a long way, on narrow webbing, over a shoulder with nothing else on it. Outside that, it mostly costs you. Padding adds bulk, slows transitions, slips on smooth outerwear, holds water, and on some designs it blocks the adjuster from running freely.

The honest position is that most shooters who think they need a padded sling actually need wider webbing, a better length setting, or a smarter attachment point. This post works through when that is true and when it is not.

What padding actually does

A sling pad does one useful thing: it spreads the load across a larger area of your shoulder and puts a compressible layer between the webbing edge and your trapezius.

That is worth stating precisely, because it tells you when padding will help. Pressure is force divided by area. The force is fixed, it is the weight of your shotgun. The only lever padding pulls is area. If the pad is genuinely wider than the webbing, it lowers pressure. If it is the same width and merely thicker, it is only softening the edge, which is a much smaller effect than people expect.

Two things padding does not do. It does not reduce recoil, which reaches you through the buttstock and has nothing to do with the strap. And it does not fix a badly balanced gun. If the muzzle dives into your hip or the gun swings when you turn, that is an attachment point and length problem, and no pad will touch it.

Where padding genuinely helps

Long carries with a heavy gun. A loaded shotgun with a light, an optic and a full magazine tube gets heavy over a few miles. Time under load matters more than the weight itself. Thirty minutes to a stand is one problem. Six hours of walking is another, and that is where a pad starts paying for itself.

Narrow webbing digging in. Thin webbing under load presents an edge rather than a surface. If you can feel a distinct line on your shoulder after a carry, that is a real case for spreading the load.

A bare or lightly dressed shoulder. In summer, in a t-shirt, there is nothing between the strap and your skin, and a hot shoulder chafes fast. This is one of the few cases where a pad clearly beats wider webbing, because the problem is surface texture rather than pressure.

The common thread

Every genuine case for padding involves time. If the gun is on your shoulder for hours, padding is worth considering. If it is on your body for minutes at a time between shooting, it almost certainly is not.

Where padding gets in the way

What padding buys you

  • Lower pressure on the shoulder over long carries
  • A softer surface against skin in warm weather
  • Less edge bite from narrow webbing under a heavy gun
  • Some designs add grip so the sling stays put on smooth fabric

What padding costs you

  • Bulk, which fouls layers, packs and chest rigs
  • Slower transitions, because a thick pad resists sliding across your body
  • Adjuster travel, if the pad sits on the section the strap needs to run through
  • Water absorption, which adds weight and stays cold for hours
  • Slip on smooth outerwear, where a slick pad face has less bite than webbing
  • Another component to wear out or delaminate

Two of those catch people out.

Padding and adjuster travel

On a quick adjust two-point sling, a section of webbing has to run freely through the adjuster when you pull the tab. If a fixed pad sits on that section, the adjuster either runs out of usable travel or binds against the pad edge. The sling still adjusts, but only over part of its range, and the range you lose is often exactly the one you wanted for a fast move from carry to shooting position. Sliding pads avoid this, which is why most well designed padded slings use them, but a sliding pad then has to actually stay where you put it.

Padding and speed

A transition means moving the gun and the sling across your torso quickly. A thick pad catches on layers and its own stiffness resists the sling changing shape. Neither is dramatic alone, but if speed is your priority the pad is working against you, and the comfort benefit only pays off on carries you are not doing anyway.

Webbing width: the alternative nobody talks about

Since pressure is force over area, widening the webbing achieves what a pad achieves without any of the costs above. A wider strap spreads the load, presents no edge, adds negligible bulk, absorbs no meaningful water and does not interfere with the adjuster.

The trade-off is that wider webbing is stiffer, less packable and, past a point, awkward to feed through mounts and adjusters. Beyond that ceiling a sling becomes clumsy to run and you are better off with a pad on narrower webbing.

The takeaway: if your complaint is that the strap digs in, look at the webbing width before you go shopping for padding.

If you are buying a pad, closed cell foam or a moulded pad is the sensible default for anything involving weather. Open cell foam feels best in the shop and is the worst performer outdoors.

Slip, and why it beats comfort as a criterion

A sling that will not stay on your shoulder is worse than one that is slightly uncomfortable. You spend the carry shrugging it back into place, and you cannot trust it when you need both hands.

Slip is mostly a fabric interaction. Slick shells, waxed cotton and smooth waterproofs give a strap very little to hold onto. Grippy neoprene and rubberised moulded pads genuinely help here, and this is the strongest argument for a pad that has nothing to do with comfort.

But some padding makes it worse. A smooth-faced sleeve on a smooth-faced jacket is slicker than the raw webbing underneath. If you carry in technical outerwear, check grip before you check softness.

Check this with the gun unloaded

Before testing carry positions, slip or transitions with a shotgun, confirm it is unloaded. Muzzle in a safe direction, empty the magazine tube completely, then lock the action open and check the chamber by sight and by feel. Magazine tube and chamber, both. Wet weather, water weight and the blind

A waterfowl setup is where padding is most often assumed and least often justified.

An absorbent pad in a wet blind takes on water, gets heavy, stays cold and presses that cold against you for the rest of the morning. It also takes far longer to dry than webbing, which matters if the sling goes back in a bag at the end of the day. Salt water makes all of that worse and adds a corrosion problem around any hardware sitting under a soaked pad.

A wet pad also goes slick, so you lose the grip benefit exactly when you need it, sitting in a boat in a rain shell. How to test whether you need it

  1. Clear the gun

    Muzzle in a safe direction, magazine tube emptied, chamber checked visually and by feel. Confirm it twice and leave the ammunition elsewhere.

  2. Set the sling length properly first

    A gun hanging at the wrong height loads your shoulder unevenly and feels like a padding problem when it is not. Get the length right before judging comfort.

  3. Walk for thirty minutes in the clothing you actually hunt in

    Not in a t-shirt indoors. Layers, pack, everything, carried the way you carry it in the field.

  4. Note what hurts, and where

    A hot spot on top of the shoulder points at pressure, which padding or wider webbing fixes. A dragging ache across the whole shoulder points at weight and time, which nothing on the strap fully solves. Chafing points at surface texture.

  5. Count how often you shrugged it back into place

    More than once or twice and you have a slip problem, not a comfort problem. Solve that first.

What to choose for your use case

Tactical or defensive setups, and anywhere transitions matter. Go unpadded. Speed, low bulk and full adjuster travel are worth more than shoulder comfort on carries measured in minutes.

Upland walking, all day, heavy gun. A pad is defensible and this is the strongest case for one. Choose closed cell or moulded over open cell foam, and choose a sliding pad so the adjuster keeps its range.

Waterfowl and anything wet. Go unpadded, or accept a closed cell pad at most.

Stand hunting with a short walk in. Unpadded. You are not on the strap long enough for the benefit to appear, and the bulk is a liability in a blind. Our shotgun sling for hunting guide covers the wider hunting configuration question.

Frequently asked questions

Does a padded shotgun sling reduce recoil?

No. Recoil travels into your shoulder pocket through the buttstock, not through the strap on top of your shoulder. Sling padding is a carry comfort feature only. For less felt recoil, look at the recoil pad on the stock, the gun’s weight and your load selection.

Is a wider sling better than a padded one?

For most people, yes. Wider webbing spreads the load the same way a pad does, without adding bulk, absorbing water or eating into adjuster travel. The exception is a bare shoulder in warm weather, where a soft surface beats a wide one because the problem is chafing rather than pressure.

Will a padded sling slow down my transitions?

Usually a little, sometimes a lot. Bulk catches on layers and gear, and a stiff pad resists the sling moving across your body. If your priority is getting the gun up fast, that is a real cost. If your priority is a six hour walk, it is irrelevant.

Which padding material is best for wet conditions?

Closed cell foam or a moulded polymer pad. Both shed water rather than soaking it up, and both dry quickly. Open cell foam is the one to avoid outdoors: it feels the softest in your hand and holds the most water in the field.
