Fitting a crossbow sling comes down to one decision made carefully: how much strap runs between the two attachment points, and therefore where the bow sits on your body when your hands are empty. Set that length so the bow rides clear of your hips and your seat, snug enough that it does not swing when you bend, and open enough that you can get out of it without fighting the strap. This is a fitting guide rather than a shopping guide. Before any of it applies, you have to know what your own bow offers as an attachment point, and the only reliable sources for that are the bow in front of you and its manual.
Why a crossbow fits differently to a rifle
A rifle hanging on a sling is close to a straight line. It is long, narrow and reasonably balanced along its length, so lengthening or shortening the strap mostly moves the whole thing up and down your torso. A crossbow does not behave that way. It is wide at one end, comparatively short overall, and carries a lot of its mass forward and high. Change the length and you are not just raising or lowering the bow, you are changing the angle it hangs at, which changes what the limb tips are going to hit.
The limbs are the part that finds trouble, catching on branches, brush, door frames, truck seats and tree steps. People usually read that as a snagging problem and cinch everything tighter, when the real fix was a small change to the hang angle.
The second difference is that a crossbow has an area you must keep completely clear. Anything routed across the rail or into the string path is a safety problem, not a comfort compromise. Route around that area every time, with no exceptions. So fitting is really three constraints held at once: clearance from your body so you can walk and sit, clearance for the limb tips so you can move through cover, and total avoidance of the rail and string path.
Find your attachment points before you touch the strap
Nothing in this article works until you know what your bow actually gives you to attach to. Do not assume, do not copy a setup you saw in a video, and do not take a forum post as fact. Look at your own bow in good light with the manual open. Broadly, crossbows present a few kinds of provision, and any given bow may have some, all or none of them:
- Integrated accessory holes. Openings moulded or machined into the stock or forend intended to take a strap, clip or stud. If your manual identifies one as a sling point, that is your best answer.
- Rear provisions. Anything toward the butt or along the stock the manufacturer designates for carry, giving you the rear end of a two-point setup.
- Forward provisions. Anything on or near the forend intended for carry. The forward point does more to control the hang angle than the rear one does.
- Aftermarket clamp adapters. Brackets that grip a rail section or a suitable part of the frame and present a loop or socket. They must clamp on structure the manufacturer says can take a load, never on limbs, cams, cables or anything in the string path.
- No provision at all. A legitimate outcome. A case, a backpack-style carry system or a body harness is the honest answer, and a better one than improvising a mount.
If the manual does not identify a sling attachment point, treat that as a no until the manufacturer tells you otherwise. A short email beats guessing about a load-bearing attachment on something holding that much stored energy. Never dry fire the bow. Keep your hands and fingers entirely out of the rail and the string path at all times, including while slinging and unslinging the bow, because that is how people lose fingers. De-cock or discharge into a target before transporting the bow, before climbing anything and before fitting or adjusting any accessory. Inspect the string, cables and limbs before every use. Never carry a cocked crossbow with a bolt loaded except when you are actively hunting and it is permitted where you are.
Decide where the bow should ride
Length is the answer to a question, and the question is where you want the bow when your hands are busy. Answer that first, because a length that is right for one carry position is wrong for another.

Most people want two of those positions on the same walk, which is why adjustability matters more on a crossbow than on almost anything else. Setting carry length step by step
Do this at home, standing up, with room to move. Not in the dark at the trailhead on opening morning.
- De-cock and clear the bow first
Discharge into a target or use the manufacturer’s de-cocking method. Nothing in this procedure happens on a cocked bow. Confirm the rail is empty and keep your fingers out of the string path for every step that follows.
- Attach at the points your manual designates
Front point and rear point, routed so no part of the strap or hardware crosses the rail or the string track. Check the routing from both sides of the bow before you tension anything.
- Start deliberately long
Let the sling out further than you think you need. It is much easier to feel where the bow is sitting when it is loose, and easier to take slack out than to hunt for length you already gave away.
- Put on the exact clothing you will be wearing
Jacket, vest, pack straps, everything. A length dialled in over a t-shirt is a different length once a hunting jacket is under it, and the difference is enough to change how the bow hangs.
- Shorten in small increments and walk between each one
Take up a little, walk ten or fifteen steps, then stop and notice what the bow is doing. Watch for two things: whether the limb tips are getting near your legs or the ground, and whether the bow is standing off your body instead of lying against it.
- Test the sit and the step down
Sit on a chair, then stand. Step down off a kerb or a low step. This is where a length that felt fine on flat ground reveals itself, because sitting and stepping down are the two motions that swing a crossbow into your legs.
- Test the transition you actually need
Move from carry to your ready position, then back to carry. Do it slowly the first several times, hands clear of the rail throughout. If the transition needs two hands and a look down, the length is wrong.
- Mark the setting
Once it is right, mark the strap with a stitch, a small mark or a piece of tape so you can return to it after anyone borrows it or after you loosen it for a case.
The most common error in that whole procedure is skipping step four. People fit in the garage in a shirt and then wonder why the bow bounces in November.
Adjusting between early and late season layers
Layers change two things at once. They add thickness between the strap and your body, which effectively shortens the sling, and they change whether the strap stays where you put it.
Treat your heaviest expected layer as the baseline. Fit to the bulkiest clothing you will genuinely wear, then keep that setting and take up the slack when you are in lighter kit. Fitting in reverse, to a thin layer, gives you a sling that is uncomfortably tight the first cold morning.
Watch the shoulder specifically. On a slick shell the strap migrates toward the outside of your shoulder as you walk, and a crossbow hanging outboard swings much further when you bend. On heavy wool or fleece the strap stays put but sits higher, which raises the whole bow and can bring the limb tips near your head when you crouch.
Gloves deserve a mention too. Any adjustment you make in the field, you will eventually be making in gloves. Practise it at home in gloves, and if it cannot be done that way, set it before you leave and leave it alone.
How a pack changes the answer
Adding a pack is not a small modification to the fit. A pack occupies the same shoulders and the same torso the sling is using, and the two will compete unless you plan for it.
Decide which one goes on first and stick to it. Sling under the pack straps means the bow is locked in place and will not shift, but you cannot get out of the sling without dropping the pack. Sling over the pack straps means you can shed the bow independently, but the sling now sits on a moving surface and will slide more.
For most hunting walks, sling over the pack is the safer default, because being able to separate yourself from the bow quickly matters more than the last bit of stability. It usually needs a slightly shorter setting than pack-free carry. Remember that taking the pack off then drops the bow lower on your body, so do that deliberately with a hand on the bow rather than shrugging out of both at once.
Stopping the bow swinging when you bend or climb
Swing is the failure everyone actually complains about. It is what makes a crossbow feel unwieldy on a sling, and it is almost always a length and angle problem rather than a strap quality problem.
A slung object swings because there is a gap between it and your body. Close the gap and the swing goes away. The gap usually opens up in one of three ways: the sling is too long overall, the two points are set so the bow hangs at an angle that stands the limbs away from you, or the strap has migrated outboard so the bow hangs off the edge of you rather than against you. Fix them in that order. Shorten first and retest. If the bow still stands off, look at the angle and at what the forward attachment is doing. If the bow lies flat but wanders on your shoulder, the fix is where the strap sits, not how long it is.
Climbing punishes a loose fit hardest and deserves its own rules. De-cock or discharge before you climb, always. Many hunters prefer to haul the bow up on a rope rather than climb with it slung at all, and that is generally the safer choice. Stand with the bow slung the way you intend to carry it, then bend forward as if picking something up off the ground. If the bow rotates away from your body and hangs free, it is too long or the angle is wrong. Test the fit before you rely on it
A fit is a claim, and it should be tested before you take it somewhere that matters. All of this happens with the bow de-cocked and the rail empty. Walk with it at home for long enough that a rubbing point has time to announce itself, because discomfort that appears at fifteen minutes will be intolerable at two hours.
Then run the awkward movements deliberately. Sit down and stand up. Step down off something. Duck under a branch or a doorway. Crouch fully and stand again. Get in and out of a vehicle seat. Each of those is a real motion you will make on a hunt, and each one tests a different part of the fit.
Check the hardware while you are at it. Every attachment point, buckle and clip should be inspected before you trust the bow to it. Look for anything backing out, anything deforming and any wear where the strap passes through metal. How long should a crossbow sling be?
There is no single number, because it depends on your torso, your layers, whether you wear a pack and which carry position you want. Fit it by feel using the procedure above: start long, wear your real clothing, shorten in small steps, and stop when the bow lies against your body and stays there when you bend and sit.
Should I fit the sling with a cocked bow to be realistic?
No. All fitting, adjusting and testing happens with the bow de-cocked and the rail empty. Cocking changes nothing about how the strap sits, so there is no benefit, and handling a cocked bow while your hands are near the rail is exactly the situation that injures people.
My bow swings into my legs when I step down. What do I change first?
Shorten it. Swing is almost always excess length letting a gap open between the bow and your body. If shortening it does not fix the swing, look at the hang angle next, and specifically at whether the forward attachment point is where you want it, since that point does most of the work in controlling the angle.
What if my crossbow has no sling attachment points at all?
Then do not improvise one. Use a case, a backpack-style carry system or a harness designed for the job. An attachment clamped to something that was never meant to take a load is a failure waiting to happen, and it will fail while you are carrying something with a great deal of stored energy.
