The best sling for an AR 10 is the one built for the extra weight, because weight is what makes a large-frame rifle a different problem to a carbine. Everything else follows from it: how the webbing sits on your shoulder over a long walk, how hard the attachment hardware is working, where the mounts need to sit on a longer receiver and handguard, and which carry positions stay comfortable when the gun is genuinely heavy. Pick for load handling first and features second.

Confirm the rifle is unloaded before fitting or adjusting a sling. Magazine out, bolt locked back, chamber checked visually and by feel, muzzle in a safe direction throughout. Fitting a sling means moving the rifle around and putting weight on it, and a heavy rifle punishes a careless grip. Separately: check what mounting provision your specific rifle and handguard actually have against the manufacturer’s own documentation. Do not assume, and do not take a product photo as proof.
What “AR-10” actually means
“AR-10” gets used as shorthand for the whole family of large-frame AR pattern rifles, most of them chambered in .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor. In practice it is a loose umbrella rather than a single standard. The original AR-10 name belongs to one lineage, and the wider category grew up around several patterns that are similar in concept and not necessarily interchangeable in detail.
That matters for slings only in one respect, but it is an important one. Receiver lengths, handguard interfaces, stock and buffer tube configurations and factory-fitted sling provisions vary between makers and between models from the same maker. Parts that fit one large-frame rifle may not fit another, and cross-compatibility claims that circulate on forums are frequently wrong.
So this post will not tell you which pattern takes which mount. It will tell you what a heavier rifle demands of a sling, and leave the fitment question where it belongs: with your rifle’s manufacturer and your own eyes on the actual hardware. Weight is the whole story
A large-frame AR is meaningfully heavier than a standard carbine before you add anything to it. The receivers are bigger, the barrel is usually thicker for its length, the bolt carrier assembly is larger, and a loaded magazine of full-power cartridges weighs more than a loaded magazine of intermediate ones. Then most people put an optic on it, which is often a heavier optic than they would run on a carbine, and sometimes a bipod as well.
None of that is news to anyone who owns one. What people underestimate is how the extra weight interacts with time. A sling that is perfectly comfortable for ten minutes can be genuinely painful after an hour, and the difference is not linear. Pressure concentrated on a small area of shoulder is tolerable briefly and intolerable eventually, because the tissue underneath does not recover while the load is still on it.
The same weight also changes the failure question. Everything the sling does under load is amplified. Hardware that shifts a little under a carbine’s weight shifts more. An adjuster that creeps slightly creeps faster. A mount that was marginal becomes the thing that fails. This is why “it works fine on my AR-15” is weak evidence for a large-frame rifle.
And it changes handling. A heavier rifle swings harder when you let go of it, hits your leg harder in a transition, and takes more effort to bring up from a hanging carry. Sling choices that are about comfort on a light rifle become about control on a heavy one.

Shoulder pressure: width or padding
There are two ways to make a heavy rifle sit better on your shoulder, and they are not the same solution. Wider webbing spreads the same load over more area, which lowers the pressure at every point. Padding adds a compliant layer that deforms and distributes the load, and also cushions the impact when the rifle bounces on the move.
Width is the more efficient answer if you only care about static pressure, because it costs nothing in bulk and does not change how the sling behaves. Padding is the better answer if the rifle is moving a lot, or if you carry over a bare shoulder or thin clothing where a webbing edge digs in. It costs bulk, it can snag, and a pad in the wrong place gets in the way of shouldering the rifle quickly.
The trap with padding is placement. A pad that sits nicely on your shoulder in one carry position ends up under your armpit or across your chest in another, at which point it is dead weight and an obstruction. For a lot of shooters the practical answer with a heavy rifle is decent webbing width plus a carry position that keeps the load in one place, rather than reaching straight for a pad.
The weak point is usually the hardware
Ask people what fails on a sling and most will say the webbing. That is rarely what happens. Quality webbing is very strong in tension, and it is not what a hanging rifle is testing. What the rifle is testing is every point where the load changes direction or changes material: the hooks, the swivels, the adjuster, the buckles, the stitching at the ends, and the mount screwed to the gun.
Those are the parts that carry concentrated stress rather than distributed stress. A plastic buckle under sustained load from a heavy rifle is being asked to do something quite different from the same buckle on a light one. A push-button swivel that has worn is being asked to hold more. Stitching at a termination point is taking the whole load through a small area.
This is where all metal hardware stops being a marketing line and starts being the actual reason to choose one sling over another. The other half of the hardware question is the mount, which is a separate purchase and a separate failure mode. A sling is only as trustworthy as the fitting it is anchored to, and that fitting is bolted, clamped or screwed into your rifle. With the rifle confirmed unloaded, sling it up and put your weight against the sling in each carry position you use. Bounce it. Let it hang. Then check every screw, every swivel and every adjuster for movement. Do that once when you fit it and again after the first real day of carrying it. Things loosen, and a heavy rifle finds the loose thing faster than a light one does.
Mount placement moves on a longer rifle
A large-frame AR is a longer rifle, and length changes where the sling wants to attach. The forward point that felt correct on a carbine can end up too far back on a longer handguard, which shortens the effective distance between the two anchors and makes the rifle sit differently against your body.
The rear point moves too. A longer receiver and a different stock configuration change where the sling naturally leaves the rifle, which changes how the rifle rotates when you let it hang. Neither of these is fixed by making the sling longer. They are geometry problems, and the fix is to move the attachment points rather than add slack.
Practically, expect to test a couple of forward positions before settling. The signs you have it wrong are the rifle hanging muzzle-down harder than you want, the buttstock swinging into your ribs, or the rifle rolling so the optic faces your body. Those are all telling you the anchor points and the rifle’s balance are not agreeing. Balance and barrel profile
Balance is where barrel profile shows up. A heavier barrel puts more of the rifle’s mass forward of your hands, which makes the muzzle want to drop. On a precision-oriented large-frame rifle with a thick barrel and a long handguard, that forward bias is pronounced, and a sling set for a lighter, shorter setup will let the muzzle dive.
Moving the forward attachment point further out generally settles a nose-heavy rifle in a hanging carry, because the anchor is closer to where the mass actually is. Moving it back does the opposite. That is worth knowing before you conclude the sling is the problem, because in a lot of cases the sling is fine and the attachment geometry is fighting the rifle’s balance.
None of this affects how the rifle shoots, but it affects everything about how it carries and how fast you can get it up and on target. Carry positions for a heavy rifle
Some carry positions scale to weight and some do not. The ones that keep the load close to your body, distributed across your back or across both shoulders, stay usable for a long time. The ones that hang the rifle off a single point or let it swing freely get old quickly with a heavy gun.

What to look for
- Start with the hardware
Metal at every load-bearing junction. Look at the hooks, the swivels, the adjuster body and the terminations, because those are where concentrated stress lives.
- Then the webbing
Enough width to spread the load, and a material that resists abrasion and moisture. Maritime grade webbing is chosen for exactly that kind of exposure.
- Check the adjuster holds
Set the length, load it with the full weight of the rifle, and see whether it creeps. An adjuster that slips under a heavy rifle will annoy you every time you carry it.
- Get enough adjustment range for your kit
Set it up wearing what you actually wear. A length that works over a t-shirt will be short over winter layers or a plate carrier.
- Sort the mounts before you sort the sling
Confirm what your specific rifle and handguard provide, from the manufacturer, and buy mounts to suit. This is the step people skip and then blame the sling.
- Carry it loaded, on foot, before you commit
Sling comfort is a function of time. A short test in the driveway tells you very little that an hour on your feet will not correct.
