To sight in a rifle: confirm it is unloaded, build a rest that removes your body from the equation, get on paper at short range, then shoot three-shot groups and move the sights to the center of the group. With iron sights you move the rear sight in the direction you want the group to go and the front sight the opposite way. With an optic you dial the turrets instead.

Safety before anything else

Sighting in means handling the rifle, turning screws and walking downrange. Confirm it is unloaded before every one of those, not just the first. Magazine out, action open, look and feel inside the chamber.

Range rules that do not bend

Shoot only where there is a proper backstop and a known safe impact area behind the target. Muzzle stays downrange, finger off the trigger until the sights are on target, and the action stays open with the rifle unloaded and benched whenever anyone is forward of the firing line. Obey the range’s cold and hot line commands, and wear eye and ear protection. Never drift a sight, torque a base screw or clear a stoppage with a loaded rifle.

Build a position that does not lie to you

You cannot zero what you cannot hold still. Every correction is only as good as the group it came from, so position matters more than adjustment technique.

Bags

A front bag under the forend and a rear bag under the toe of the stock is the most reliable bench setup. Support the forend, never the barrel: a barrel resting on anything solid changes its harmonics and its point of impact. Let the bags carry the weight.

Bipod

A bipod is fast and travels well, but it needs consistent loading. Push forward into it the same amount every shot, because a rifle loaded hard on one shot and lightly on the next strings vertically. On a hard bench a bipod can also hop under recoil.

The hasty sling

The hasty sling is a genuine field technique, not a gimmick. You run your support arm through the sling, wrap once, and let the tension between the forward attachment point and your arm pull the rifle back into your shoulder. Done properly it adds real, repeatable steadiness in sitting, kneeling and standing positions, which is where a hunting rifle actually gets shot from.

It only works with a sling attached at two points, because the support comes from tension along the strap. A single point sling cannot provide it. Getting on paper without burning a box

Start close. Ten to twenty five yards with a large aiming point on a big backer means a wild first shot still leaves a mark you can measure from. Hunting for a hole at 100 yards wastes a box of ammunition.

With a bolt action you can bore sight for free. Remove the bolt, rest the rifle so it cannot move, look through the bore until the target is centered, then without disturbing the rifle adjust the sights until they point at the same spot. That is not a zero, but it gets you on paper. A laser or collimator bore sighter does the same job on rifles you cannot see through.

Zeroing iron sights

Iron sights work on alignment: your eye lines the top of the front post up with the rear notch, or centres it in the rear aperture. Move either sight and you change where the barrel points when that alignment looks correct. That is why the two behave in opposite directions.

The rule that feels backwards

Move the rear sight the same direction you want the group to move. Move the front sight the opposite direction. Shooters remember it as front opposite, rear same.

The reason is easiest to see with elevation. Raise the front post and you have to drop the muzzle to bring it back into alignment with the rear sight, so your rounds land lower. Raise the rear sight and the muzzle comes up, so the group climbs. Windage follows the same logic sideways.

Elevation with a front post

On many rifles the front post is the elevation adjustment. Threaded posts screw up and down, often held by a spring detent you depress with a tool or a cartridge tip before rotating. Some are marked with an arrow and the word UP, and on many designs that marking refers to where the bullet goes, not the post. Read the manual, and count the increments so you can undo a change exactly.

Windage with the rear sight

Aperture rear sights usually have a windage knob with detents: turn it toward the direction you want the group to move. Open notch rear sights often sit in a dovetail and are drifted sideways with a brass or nylon punch, again in the direction you want the group to go. Work in small increments, mark your starting position, and support the rifle rather than hammering against an unsupported barrel.

Sight radius changes how sensitive your rifle is

The distance between your front and rear sight is the sight radius. A longer radius means the same sight movement changes where the rifle points by less, so adjustments are finer and alignment errors cost you less. How far each click or turn moves your impact depends on that radius and your sight’s thread pitch, so use your manual rather than a number from a forum.

The process

  1. Confirm unloaded, then check the hardware

    Sight bases and action screws. A loose action screw prints like a sight problem and undoes everything you do next.

  2. Get on paper at close range

    One careful shot from the rest at a big aiming point, just to see where the rifle is pointing.

  3. Make a coarse correction and confirm the direction

    Adjust, then fire one shot to prove the impact moved the way you intended. Reversing a wrong-way correction early is cheap.

  4. Shoot a three-shot group at your zero distance

    Same aiming point, same position. One hole tells you nothing about where the rifle shoots.

  5. Measure from the center of the group

    Work from the middle of the three holes, never your best one. Fix windage first, then elevation.

  6. Adjust and confirm with a fresh group

    Three more rounds. If they land where you want, stop. Chasing single holes is how a good zero gets undone.

  7. Let the barrel cool

    A hot sporter-weight barrel can walk its group, so pause between groups rather than firing a long string.

Choosing a zero distance for a hunting rifle

Most hunters zero a centerfire rifle at 100 yards, largely because that is what ranges offer and it is easy to reason about. Some set the bullet slightly high at 100 so it stays inside a vital-sized circle further out, the idea behind maximum point blank range.

Do not take drop figures from an article. How high and how far your bullet flies depends on your cartridge, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, barrel length and sight height above bore. Use the published ballistic data for the ammunition you are shooting, then confirm it on paper at the distances you hunt. Keep the note with the rifle.

When and how to move to an optic

Irons are simple, tough and always there. They also ask your eye to focus on the front sight while the target blurs, which gets harder in low light and as your eyes age. That is why most hunting rifles end up wearing glass.

Staying with irons

  • Nothing to switch on, nothing to run out of battery
  • No mount to work loose and no rings to torque
  • Best at moderate distances in good light

Moving to an optic

  • Target and reticle sit on one plane, which is easier on the eye
  • Magnification helps identify the target and place the shot
  • Adds a mount, a height-over-bore offset and one more thing to confirm

When you mount one, treat it as a fresh start. Torque the bases and rings to the values in the instructions, set eye relief so you get a full sight picture without craning, and zero the optic to where the rounds land rather than trying to match the irons. Confirm from positions you will actually use

A bench zero tells you what the rifle and ammunition can do, not what you can do standing on a slope with a pack on. Once the zero is set, shoot groups from prone, sitting and kneeling, ideally with the hasty sling, and note honestly how far they open up.

That number, not your bench group, is your real effective range.

Keeping the zero

Re-confirm after travel, after the rifle gets knocked over, after changing ammunition, and before the season opens. Three rounds at your zero distance settles it in five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Which way do I move the front sight to raise my point of impact?

Lower it. The front sight always moves opposite to where you want the group to go, so lowering the post raises your impact and raising it drops your impact. The rear sight is the intuitive one: raise the rear, the group climbs.

Can I sight in a rifle at 25 yards instead of 100?

You can get on paper there, and it saves ammunition. Treat it as a starting point rather than a finished zero, because any error at 25 yards is magnified at hunting distances. Always confirm at the distance you intend to shoot.

Do I need to re-zero if I add a sling?

No, but re-confirm if you start using the sling as a shooting support. Sling tension changes how the rifle sits in your shoulder and can shift the point of impact slightly, particularly where the sling attaches to the barrel or forend. Shoot a group the way you will hunt.
