The 25 yard zero exists because of one fact about how bullets fly: the bullet path crosses the line of sight twice, not once. Set the near crossing at a short distance and the far crossing lands somewhere useful a long way downrange, which is why people say a close zero gets you on at distance without ever going there.

That is genuinely true, and it is also where the trouble starts. Where the far crossing actually falls depends entirely on your cartridge, your load and how high your sight sits above the bore. This post is about why 25 yards works, what it really buys you, and when the arithmetic stops being trustworthy.

Why a bullet crosses the line of sight twice

Your scope or sight sits above the bore. That is the whole reason any of this happens. The line of sight is dead straight from your eye out to infinity. The bullet starts below that line, at the muzzle, and it falls the entire time it is in the air because gravity never stops working on it.

So the barrel has to be pointed slightly upward relative to the line of sight for the two to ever meet. That means the bullet leaves below the sight line, climbs up through it, spends a stretch of its flight above it, and then falls back down through it again further out. Two crossings. Between them, the bullet is above the line of sight. Beyond the second, it is below and dropping away fast.

The shape of the relationship, not a specific load. The curve is exaggerated for clarity and carries no yardages or drop figures, because those depend entirely on your cartridge and sight height.

This is a real, physical relationship and it is the same on every rifle. What is not the same on every rifle is where those two crossings land.

Near zero and far zero, in plain language

The near zero is the first crossing, close to the muzzle, and it is the one you set. The far zero is the second crossing, well downrange, and it is a consequence. You do not choose the far zero directly. It falls out of your near zero, your sight height and how fast and how efficiently your bullet flies.

The two are linked. Nudge the near zero further out and the far zero moves further out too. Raise the optic higher above the bore and both crossings shift. Change to a slower or a less aerodynamic bullet and the far crossing pulls in closer. It is one system with several inputs, not a fixed pair of numbers.

Between the two crossings the bullet is above your line of sight, and that gap has a maximum somewhere in the middle. That maximum is the mid range rise, and it is the price you pay for the far zero being as far out as it is. There is no way to have a distant far zero and a completely flat mid range. Those are the same trade.

What a 25 yard zero genuinely buys you

Set against all that theory, there are four honest, practical reasons people shoot at 25.

It gets you on paper fast. A freshly mounted optic can be pointing anywhere. At a short distance the error is small enough that your first shot lands on the backer instead of vanishing into the berm, which is the single most frustrating part of zeroing anything. Getting on paper close and then moving back is faster and cheaper than hunting for a hole at distance.

It works with the range you actually have. Plenty of indoor ranges have no line longer than 25 yards. Plenty of public outdoor ranges are crowded, or have fixed berms, or run cold ranges on a timer that makes walking downrange a chore. A zero you can actually complete beats a theoretically better zero you never finish.

It is forgiving of wind and mirage. At a short distance, the wind has almost nothing to work with. You are measuring the rifle and the load rather than the weather, which removes a variable from an already fiddly job.

It puts you close at a much longer distance. This is the headline benefit and it is real. Because of the two crossings, a rifle zeroed close is not wildly off further out. It is somewhere in the neighbourhood, which is often good enough to then confirm and refine with only a few rounds.

Before any of this

Confirm the rifle is unloaded before you touch the optic, the mount or the turrets. Magazine out, bolt back or action open, and check the chamber by sight and by touch. Keep the muzzle pointed downrange and in a safe direction at all times. Before live fire, confirm you have a safe backstop and follow the posted rules of the range you are on. A short range does not mean a forgiving one.

What it costs you

The two costs are the mid range rise and the uncertainty of the far crossing, and they are worth naming clearly.

The mid range rise means that between your two crossings, the bullet is printing above where you are aiming. On a target that is a bookkeeping problem. On a small vital area, or a small steel plate, it can be the difference between a hit and a miss, and the shooter usually does not see it coming because they zeroed carefully and the rifle is doing exactly what it was told to do. If your realistic shot distances land in the middle of that arc, a close zero is actively working against you.

The uncertainty of the far crossing is the bigger issue, and it is covered in its own section below. Short version: the number people quote for it is somebody else’s rifle.

Where a 25 yard zero shines

  • Getting a brand new optic on paper before you burn ammunition
  • Indoor ranges and any range with a hard distance limit
  • A starting point you will confirm at distance later the same day
  • Minimal wind effect, so you measure the rifle rather than the weather

Where it lets you down

  • When your real shot distances sit in the middle of the arc
  • When you treat the far crossing as a known number instead of confirming it
  • When you change ammunition and assume nothing moved
  • When precision matters more than speed of setup

Why nobody can tell you your far zero

Search for how to sight in a scope at 25 yards and you will find confident claims that a 25 yard zero gives you a specific far zero at a specific distance. Ignore all of them, including the one that sounds most authoritative. That claim can only be true for one combination of cartridge, load, barrel and sight height, and it will not be yours.

The honest way to get an answer is to put your own inputs into a ballistic calculator: your measured sight height, your ammunition’s published ballistic coefficient, and a velocity you have either chronographed or taken from the load data for a barrel like yours. That gives you a prediction. A prediction is not a zero. It tells you roughly where to look when you get out there.

Confirm at distance, do not trust the arithmetic

Here is the rule that makes the 25 yard zero safe to use: it is a starting point, not a finished job. Treat the short line as the coarse adjustment and the long line as the real one, and you get all of the convenience with none of the risk.

  1. Get on paper at the short line

    Confirm the rifle is unloaded before you touch anything, set the optic up, then use the short distance to get your first rounds somewhere you can measure from. A bore sighter makes this faster still, though it never replaces live fire.

  2. Set the near crossing deliberately

    Shoot a group rather than a shot, correct from the center of it, and confirm with a fresh group. Now you have a known near zero rather than a rough one.

  3. Run your own numbers

    Put your measured sight height, your bullet’s published ballistic coefficient and your velocity into a ballistic calculator. Write down where it says the far crossing should be. That is your prediction to test.

  4. Go to the longest line you can and shoot

    Fire a group at the distance the calculator pointed you at. Expect it to be close but not exact. Correct from what the paper shows, not from what the software said.

  5. Record the result, then leave it alone

    Write down the distance, the load, the conditions and the final setting. Re-confirm any time you change ammunition, remount the optic, or the rifle takes a knock.

If you cannot get to a longer line at all, be honest about what you have. You have a rifle that is on at a short distance and probably somewhere reasonable further out. That is a defensible position for a range gun. It is a thin basis for a shot at an animal, which is why the 100 yard zero for hunting rifles takes the opposite approach and confirms at the distance rather than calculating toward it.

When 25 is the right call and when it is not

Use a short zero as your coarse stage almost always. It is the cheapest, fastest way to get a new optic pointing in roughly the right direction, and there is no reason not to start there.

Keep it as your final zero when your realistic distances are short, when the range you have access to is short, or when the rifle’s job genuinely lives inside that first crossing. Do not keep it as your final zero when you intend to shoot out where the mid range rise or the far crossing actually matter, and never keep it because you read a number online that sounded convincing.

A word on carry and confirmation

A zero confirmed on a bench is only as good as the way the rifle gets to where you use it. Rifles that ride loose in a truck or bang against gear tend to be the ones whose zero “mysteriously” moved. Frequently asked questions

Is a 25 yard zero the same as a 100 yard zero?

No, though for many centerfire rifle loads the two settings end up close to each other, which is where the confusion comes from. They are different zeros with different mid range behaviour, and how close they land depends entirely on your load and sight height. Confirm at the distance you care about rather than assuming the two are interchangeable.

Where will my far zero be if I zero at 25 yards?

Nobody can answer that without your rifle’s details, and any specific distance you see quoted belongs to somebody else’s setup. Put your measured sight height, your bullet’s published ballistic coefficient and your actual velocity into a ballistic calculator to get a prediction, then go and confirm it on paper at the longest line you can reach.

Can I do all my zeroing at 25 yards and never shoot further?

You can, and the rifle will be genuinely useful at short distances. What you will not have is any confirmed knowledge of where it prints further out, including through the mid range rise. If you intend to take longer shots, treat the short zero as the first half of the job.

Does sight height really change things that much?

Yes, and it is the variable people most often ignore. The whole geometry starts from the fact that the sight sits above the bore, so a taller mount changes the angle needed to make the two paths meet and moves both crossings. Measure it on your own rifle from the center of the optic to the center of the bore rather than using a generic figure.
