The 100 yard zero is the default for hunting rifles because it is simple, honest and confirmed. Most shots taken at game fall inside it, the trajectory inside that distance is flat enough to hold dead on, and it requires no mental arithmetic at the moment you least want to be doing arithmetic.

The important word is confirmed. A 100 yard zero is worth having because you shot it at 100 yards, from a rest, with the ammunition you will actually hunt with. It is worth much less if you calculated it from a short line and assumed the rest.

Why 100 yards became the hunting default

Three separate arguments all land on the same distance, which is unusual and is why the convention has stuck.

The first is where shots actually get taken. Across most of the country, in most terrain, at most of the game people hunt, the shot presents itself well inside 100 yards. Timber, field edges, river bottoms and stands are all close ground. Long shots happen, and some hunters build their whole setup around them, but they are the exception rather than the thing to optimise for by default.

The second is that inside that distance the bullet path is close enough to the line of sight that you can aim at what you want to hit. There is no hold to remember and no correction to apply. That is worth more in the field than most people credit, because the field is where you are cold, breathing hard, on a slope, and running out of light.

The third is that 100 yards is a distance you can actually get to. Almost every range with a rifle line has one, spotting scopes and targets are set up for it, and it is short enough that wind and mirage are manageable while being long enough to show you real group size. It is a distance where the rifle can prove itself rather than one where careful shooting is hidden by a target that is simply too close.

Before you shoot anything

Confirm the rifle is unloaded before you touch the optic, the mount, the turrets or the sling. Magazine out, action open, and check the chamber by sight and by touch. Keep the muzzle pointed downrange and in a safe direction at all times, including when you are moving between positions. Before live fire, confirm you have a safe backstop and follow the posted rules of the range you are on. Field position practice on a public range needs clearing with the range officer first.

Confirm at 100, do not calculate from 25

There is a shortcut that gets recommended constantly: zero at a short line, and let the second crossing of the line of sight put you approximately on at 100. The physics behind it is real, and we explain it properly in the post on the 25 yard zero. As a way to get a new optic pointing roughly the right direction before you burn ammunition, it is excellent.

As a way to finish a hunting rifle, it is not good enough. The far crossing depends on your cartridge, your bullet, your velocity out of your barrel and how high your optic sits above the bore. A prediction from a ballistic calculator with your own measured inputs will get you close. Close is a fine place to start a confirmation group and a poor basis for a shot at an animal.

So use the short line as your coarse stage if it helps, then walk back and do the real work at 100.   1. Start with the rifle cold and clean of yesterday

    Confirm it is unloaded, check every mount and base screw and the action screws, then leave the rifle alone on the bench for a few minutes so the barrel is at ambient temperature before the first shot.

  2. Fire and mark the cold bore shot on its own

    One round at a fresh aiming point, then mark that hole and note it separately. This is the shot that most closely resembles the one you will take in the field, and it deserves its own record rather than being averaged away.

  3. Shoot a group with the ammunition you will hunt with

    Three rounds, deliberately, with a pause between each so the barrel does not heat up and walk the group. Practice ammunition tells you about your shooting. Hunting ammunition tells you about your zero.

  4. Correct from the center of the group, once

    Windage first, then elevation, following the click value printed on your own turret. Then stop touching it and confirm with a fresh group. Chasing individual holes is how people spend a box of ammunition getting further from a zero.

  5. Repeat the cold bore shot on a later day

    One shot, cold, at the start of your next session, before anything else. Two or three of those recorded over separate days tell you far more about your rifle than a single good afternoon on the bench.

Cold bore, clean bore and fouled bore

These are two different things that get muddled together, and both are worth understanding before you trust a zero.

A cold bore shot is the first round through a barrel at ambient temperature. In the field it is almost always the shot that counts, because you do not get a warmup on a deer. Many rifles put their cold bore shot in a slightly different place from the rest of a group, and the only way to know whether yours does is to record it deliberately, over several separate sessions, rather than mixing it into a five shot group and never seeing it.

A clean bore is a barrel that has been scrubbed of copper and carbon. Many rifles need a small number of rounds through a freshly cleaned barrel before the point of impact settles, which is why the group after a deep clean can sit somewhere slightly different. The practical implication is straightforward: do not deep clean the rifle the night before you hunt and then head out on a zero you confirmed on a fouled barrel. Either leave the barrel in the condition you zeroed it in, or clean it and then re-confirm with a few rounds before you go.

Let the barrel cool

A hot barrel is not the barrel you will hunt with. Shooting quick strings heats the steel, and a heated barrel can walk a group in a way that has nothing to do with your zero. Work in threes with real pauses between them, and if the barrel is warm to the back of your hand, wait. It costs you fifteen minutes and saves you an afternoon of chasing a group that was never moving for the reason you thought.

Field positions, not just the bench

A bench exists to take you out of the measurement so you can see what the rifle and the load are doing. That is exactly what you want while you are setting a zero. It is also the least representative shooting you will do all year.

Once the zero is confirmed, spend the rest of the session shooting the positions you will really use, without touching the turrets again. You are no longer testing the rifle at that point. You are testing yourself, and finding out what your honest maximum distance is from a position you can actually get into on the ground.

A sling earns its place here rather than on the walk in. Looping up or applying tension through a sling in sitting or kneeling takes a surprising amount of movement out of the rifle, and it is available anywhere, unlike a tripod you left in the truck. What the bench is for

  • Removing you from the measurement so the rifle and load are visible
  • Setting and confirming the actual zero
  • Comparing loads honestly against each other
  • Diagnosing hardware problems, since your wobble is not masking them

What the bench cannot tell you

  • How steady you are in the position the ground will give you
  • Your realistic maximum distance on game
  • Whether your sling and gear actually work under you
  • How the rifle behaves on a slope, in wind or in poor light

Re-checking a zero after travel

Rifles get knocked. Cases get thrown into truck beds, checked onto aircraft, dropped off quad racks and leaned against trees that then fall over. Any of those can move a zero, and none of them announce it.

The rule is simple: if the rifle travelled, confirm before you hunt. Three rounds at 100 yards answers the question in ten minutes and costs almost nothing. Check the mount screws and action screws before you shoot, because a screw that loosened in transit will make you chase a phantom optic fault.

Write it down or you do not really have it

A zero is a piece of information, and information you did not record is information you will argue with yourself about in six months. Keep a page in a notebook or a note on your phone with the date, the distance, the exact ammunition down to the bullet weight and lot if you know it, your measured sight height, the temperature, the conditions, your group size and where the cold bore shot landed.

That record does two things. It tells you whether a surprise on the range is the rifle or you, and it gives you the real inputs you need if you ever want to run a ballistic calculator for distances beyond your zero. A calculator fed with guessed velocity and a generic sight height produces confident nonsense. Fed with your own measurements it produces something worth testing on paper. The practical recommendation

For a general purpose hunting rifle in the terrain most people hunt, zero at 100 yards, confirmed on paper with your hunting ammunition, from a rest, with the cold bore shot recorded separately. Then leave it alone.

Use a short line only as your coarse stage to get on paper, not as your final answer. If your hunting genuinely happens further out, do not stretch the zero to compensate. Keep the simple zero and learn your holds or your dial settings from recorded data, because a rifle that is dead on at a known distance and has a written dope card beats a rifle with a clever zero that its owner is doing arithmetic about in the last five minutes of light.

Frequently asked questions

Should I zero my hunting rifle at 100 yards or further out?

For most hunting in most terrain, 100 yards is the better default because the majority of shots fall inside it and you can aim dead on with nothing to remember. Stretching the zero further out to gain reach also raises the bullet through the middle distances, which is exactly where most shots actually occur. Keep the simple zero and learn your holds from recorded data instead.

How many rounds does it take to confirm a 100 yard zero?

If the rifle was already zeroed, a cold bore shot plus a three round group is usually enough to tell you whether anything moved. If you are correcting, budget another group after each adjustment and confirm once more at the end. Working in threes with cooling pauses uses less ammunition than firing long strings and chasing a walking group.

Do I need to re-zero after cleaning the barrel?

You may need to re-confirm rather than re-zero. Many rifles take a few rounds through a freshly cleaned barrel before the point of impact settles. The practical answer is to avoid deep cleaning right before a hunt, or if you do clean it, foul the barrel with a few rounds and confirm on paper before you rely on it.

My rifle is zeroed on the bench but I miss in the field. What is wrong?

Usually nothing is wrong with the rifle. The bench removes almost all of your movement, and the field does not. Shoot the positions you actually use, with a sling for support, and find your honest maximum distance from those positions rather than from a bench group. That number is often shorter than people expect, and knowing it is what makes a clean shot repeatable.
