Sighting in an air rifle follows the same logic as any other scoped gun, but the pellet’s flight path is far more curved over short distance. That means your line of sight and your pellet path cross twice within the space of a back garden, and the hold changes noticeably between those two points. Zero for the range you actually shoot at, then learn what the pellet does either side of it.

What is actually different about an air rifle

Three things separate an air rifle from a rimfire or a centerfire for the purposes of zeroing, and all three catch people out.

The first is the shape of the flight path. A pellet is light, blunt and slow compared to a bullet, and it sheds speed quickly. The arc it follows is therefore much more pronounced across the short distances an air rifle is used at. Where a rifle shooter can treat the first stretch of range as effectively flat, an air rifle shooter cannot.

The second is the scope’s height above the bore. That offset is a fixed distance, and because the whole engagement happens close in, that offset is a large fraction of the total picture. At very short range the pellet is still well below your line of sight simply because it has not risen to meet it yet.

The third is recoil behavior, specifically on a spring piston rifle. A springer moves in more than one direction before the pellet leaves the muzzle, which makes it far more sensitive to how it is held than a rimfire is. That single fact drives most of the advice further down this page.

The pellet starts below your line of sight, rises to meet it, sits above it for a stretch, then falls away. Both crossings happen close in.

Backstop, ricochet and what is beyond

An air rifle is a lethal weapon. It is quiet, it is used in ordinary places, and both of those facts make it easy to be casual with. Do not be.

Non negotiable

An air rifle is not a toy. A modern hunting air rifle will penetrate deeply enough to cause a serious or fatal injury, and it deserves exactly the same handling rules as any other firearm. Shoot into a backstop that will reliably stop the pellet, and know what is behind that backstop for a long way. Pellets ricochet off hard surfaces, including stone, brick, metal and frozen ground, and they can come back toward you or leave the property in an unpredictable direction. Never shoot at a target lying flat on hard ground. Treat the rifle as loaded at all times, keep the muzzle in a safe direction, and check your local law on where you may discharge an air rifle before you set up a lane.

Wear eye protection, and insist on it for anyone standing with you. A pellet or a fragment coming back off a hard target is a real risk.

The loop, and why holdover matters in the garden

Because your scope sits above the bore, the pellet begins its flight below your line of sight. It then rises, crosses that line, travels above it for a stretch, and falls back through it a second time before dropping away. Those two crossing points are the two distances at which your point of aim and your point of impact agree.

On a centerfire rifle both crossings are spread far apart, and the pellet’s equivalent of the middle section is shallow enough to ignore. On an air rifle they sit close together and the arc between them is comparatively steep. The practical result is that the difference between a target just in front of you and one at the far end of the same lawn can be enough to change where you hold, at ranges where a rifle shooter would not think about it at all.

This is why air rifle shooters talk about holdover and hold under so much more than rifle shooters do. Very close in, the pellet has not risen to the line yet, so you hold high. Between the crossings, the pellet is above the line, so you hold low. Past the second crossing it is falling away, so you hold high again and by an increasing amount.

You cannot look those numbers up in a useful way, because they depend on your rifle, your pellet, your scope height and your conditions. You get them by shooting a mark at several measured distances with your zero already set and writing down what you saw. That page of notes is worth more than any chart.

Choosing a zero for the range you really use

Pick a zero that puts your two crossings around the distances where your targets actually appear. For most people that is a lot closer than the ranges a rifle is zeroed for, because that is where an air rifle gets used, whether that is pest control in a barn, plinking down a garden or a paper session at the club.

Answer two questions honestly first. What is the nearest shot you take, and what is the furthest you would take at live quarry? Your zero should sit inside that band, not at the end of it, so neither extreme needs a hold you cannot judge.

  1. Set up on a solid rest at a short distance

    Get on paper first at a distance where the pellet cannot miss the backer, using a big aiming mark. You are only establishing which way the scope needs to go.

  2. Correct the coarse error

    Adjust windage and elevation to walk the group to the aiming point. Follow the click value printed on your turret rather than assuming a value, and count the clicks out loud.

  3. Move out to your chosen zero distance

    Shoot a group of at least five with a springer, because a single shot tells you nothing about a rifle that is this sensitive to hold. Work from the center of the group.

  4. Refine, then stop touching the turrets

    Confirm with a fresh group. Once it is centered, the turrets are done. Everything from here is learning the trajectory, not changing it.

  5. Map your holds at measured distances

    Set the same target at several measured distances either side of your zero and shoot a small group at each. Record where the group landed relative to your aim, in reticle terms if your scope has marks.

  6. Write the card and keep it with the rifle

    Date, pellet, scope setting and the hold at each distance. Redo it if you change pellets.

Measure those distances with a tape or a rangefinder rather than pacing them, because on an air rifle a guessed range turns straight into a miss and corrupts the whole card. Our notes on how to sight in a rifle cover group discipline in more depth.

Springer recoil and why your hold matters

A spring piston rifle does something a rimfire does not. When you release the sear, a heavy spring and piston drive forward, then stop abruptly, and the rifle moves in response before the pellet has cleared the barrel. Because the disturbance happens while the pellet is still in the bore, the way the rifle is allowed to move directly changes where the pellet goes.

A rimfire is comparatively forgiving. You can clamp it in a rest and it will still group. Do any of those things with a springer and the group opens up or shifts, sometimes dramatically. It is not that the rifle is inaccurate. It is that you changed how it was allowed to move.

Spring piston

  • Very sensitive to how it is held, so hold consistency is part of the zero
  • Recoils in both directions, which is hard on scopes and mounts
  • Rewards a light, relaxed technique rather than a firm one

Pre charged and pneumatic

  • Almost no movement before the pellet leaves, so a firm rest is fine
  • Easier to zero from a bag because the hold barely changes the result
  • Point of impact can move as pressure drops through a fill, so note where in the fill you zeroed

The artillery hold

The artillery hold is the answer to springer recoil. The idea is to let the rifle move the same way on every shot rather than trying to stop it moving at all. You support it loosely and consistently, so that whatever it does, it does identically each time.

In practice that means resting the rifle on your open hand rather than gripping the forend, keeping that hand in the same place on the stock every single time, holding the grip lightly, applying gentle and consistent cheek pressure, and letting the rifle recoil freely into your shoulder rather than pulling it in hard. Nothing should be clamped. If you are shooting off a bag, the bag supports your hand, not the rifle.

The word to hold on to is consistent, not loose. A firm hold that is identical every shot beats a relaxed hold that varies.

Zero from the position you shoot from

Because hold changes point of impact on a springer, a bench zero is only strictly valid on the bench. If you take most of your shots standing against a fence post or kneeling in a barn, confirm your zero from that position too and note any difference on your card.

Mounting a scope on a springer

Two problems come up on spring piston rifles that a rimfire shooter never has to think about.

The first is scope creep. A springer’s recoil pushes a scope backward in its mounts over a session, which shows up as a zero that slowly drifts and then jumps. The fix is a scope stop, meaning a positive mechanical stop that prevents the mount sliding along the rail. Many springers have a hole or a slot in the rail for exactly this, and friction alone is not enough.

The second is droop. Some air rifles sit with the barrel angled slightly downward relative to the scope rail, which eats a large chunk of your elevation adjustment before you have started. If you find yourself near the end of the elevation travel and still shooting low, that is the symptom. The fix is a mount that compensates, either an adjustable mount or a shimmed one, so that the scope’s adjustment ends up back near the middle of its range.

Pellet choice and consistency

Pellets are not interchangeable, and the difference between two tins can be larger than the difference between two rifles. Head size, skirt shape, weight consistency and lubrication all vary, and a given barrel will simply prefer some over others.

Find the one your rifle likes by testing several types over the same session, from the same rest, at the same distance, and comparing group sizes rather than single shots. Once you have a winner, buy it in quantity from the same batch if you can, because manufacturers do change things between production runs.

Whatever you settle on, use the same pellet for zeroing that you will use afterwards. Zeroing with a cheap tin and hunting with a premium one undoes the whole exercise. If you swap pellets, treat it as a change that needs a fresh confirmation group and possibly a new hold card.

Keep the tin dry and stop shooting pellets with damaged skirts. A deformed skirt is the air rifle equivalent of a bent arrow, and it produces a flyer that looks exactly like a scope fault.

Work out your nearest and furthest realistic shot, then pick a zero between them so neither extreme needs a hold you cannot judge. There is no universal answer, because it depends on your rifle, your pellet and your scope height.

Why does my springer group well on a bag but shift when I shoot standing?
